THE BARLIN MISSION.
A YEARS WORK'. #
la Bt the Berlin Mission Society supported a boarding school and rine day schools at a cust of $1,348, which amount was subscribed in Hongkong and Cinton. Eight years inter they supported-besides the higher grade school and the theo'ngical classes, entirely supported by the mistion three boarding schools with 82 pupils, and 24 day schools, with 443 pupils. The subscriptions for this work amount ed in $1,995, and the expenses in $2,782.38 The fures of last year were as follows:-132 pupils i. four boarding schools at an expense of $1,066 77: 655 pupils in 17-day schools
is at an expense of $1,520.41, a total ex, ense of 5527.18. The subscription in Hongkong and Canton, fur which the Society is very thankful, Amounts to $1,945, The Mission is very sorry to find the expenses of one year exceeding their receipts by the large sum of $1,572 18, and would feel thankful in find sune new friends to help them overcome this difficulty.
The Mission Board has still a bather gutlay for schunts. There are of students in two higher grade schants at an expense of $4,230,241 62 students in the theningical cincts at ap expense of $1,3,894; 15 pupil in four girls schools at an expense of. $1,710.88, making a lotal expense al $1,570 08.
Having to provide for a deficit of more than Marks 100 catbed by the heavy loss of pro- perty sustained during the South African war and never refunded by the English Govern ment, this means a great addition! burlen to
the society
For those interested in the state of mis sion work and the results of last year, the Rev. A. Kollecker in his report as superintendent of the Mission Schools &anted with the Society, gives the most important figures On our to stations, too dutstations, and preach. ing places, 19 missionaries, 16 wives of mis sionaries, i single ladies, 3 nativi paston, 100 native meachers and 53 tethers were at work. Result: 17:34 eonverts have been baptized.. 751 of them heiß2 men, 137 women, and 144 children. This brings up the total number of the Christions of the Berlin. Mission in the
Canton Province to 5,153...
It is unsatisfactory to find such a defuit in the account although but aromall effort is required to wips this off. There is a sum of 31,15695 on the wrong side and considering that the subscriptions last year front, Bongkang were only $975 the debil balance should easily be done away with. Chinese officials und gentle, man subscribed $731. Canton sent, in $248, the
· Mission Board paid $2.572.89, and the support given by parents towards the boarding, schools amounted to $415.25. Against this there were payments totalling 16, 99 68
