THE PROPERTY FELL TO THE CROWN, " A singular discovery was made in New York in 1886, in connection with a dipole over a small property, left by Mr. 1. H. Paine, who was run over and killed. In the course of the litigation, a witness testified that some year ago Mr. Paine gave him a bundle, wrapped in A cotton handkerchief, and asked him (the witness) to take care of it for him. On one occasion only had Mr. Paine asked if his parcel was safe. The witness had not examined it, becaure he
supposed it to contain manuscripts, the product of Mr. Paine's pen. On learning this, the Court ordered the production of the parcel, and, when opened, it was found to can- tain upwards of £70,000 in bask-notes, and other securities to a very large amount..
