Many rumours are in circulation with regard to the origin of this fire, due, probably, to the generally excited state of the public mind at the present, time. And to the fact that no for more than twenty-four hours after-it-had occurred. The reticence shown by the authori tiss on such occasions, as we have previously remarked, rather increases thin allays excite simple nature has been alleged as a possible explanation of the fire. As is natural with battleships of the present day, all woodwork was as far as possible eliminated in the can. struction of the afikose, and near the main bridge there is no substance of an inflammable character which could be readily rei on fire, as It is exactly at this point that shelli ara aimed the course of battle. It appears, however, that the'électric wire tubes used for lighting and other purposes on board the vessel con centrale lo the neighbourhood of the main bridge, and it is thought possible that the wires became fused. While this weald account for the smoke, it scarcely explains how the fire' came to extend in the absence of woodwork in the neighbourhood, nor how the fire came to rench the magazine, whic is onturally protect ed in v rious ways against the consequences of fire breaking out on board, The explanation still leaves the matter very much of a mystery, and if will be interesting to have the report of the Committee which the Government has ap pointed to Inquire into the disaster by which Japan has lost her most powerful vessel..
