From a charming description is: "East and" Went" of Ghazipur, famous for its roses, by Ral Bahadar Lala Baijnath, we take the following extract—:
A few miles outside the town are large plots of land devoted to the cultivation of roses and
We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological gals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same Jasmine. The area under rose cultivation is those at present in use at Shanghai, and will about 500 or 600 bighat of land, and some two hundred cultivators own it. They are mostly be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Brahmans and often comparatively well-to-do Kowloon Point for the information of masters people. The trees are small, and are planted of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces-about two feet apart. Each field comprises sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows

about a bigha of land and has about a thousand- trees. The cultivation is much after the usual Indian methods, with little attempt towards improving the quality of the flowers grown, The flowers are red and small, but tha:scent is strong and swest. With a little care they : may perhaps be made larger and the' outtura greater. Each tree yields from ago to,500 flower in the seaton, and if the outturn of a bigba is a lakh of flowers, it is considered to. be good. The season is froin the middle of March to about the middle of April. The cul
manufacturers--of rose-water to supply them with all the produce of the season, in considera- tion of their having received advances of money from them. The flowers are collected by labourers early in the morning in baskets and carried to the factory where they are counted and picked.

A cone point downwards and drum below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the Colony.
A cone point downwards indicates a typhoon to the South of the Colony.
The price paid is settled in a panchayat of growers and consumers, and the rate varies from 75 to 100 rupees par lakh (hundred thou- sand). It never exceeds a hundred rupsen and sometimes comes down to even 40 to 50 rupees when the supply is in excess of the demand. The flowers are now in the factory, ready for distillation of rose-water and extraction of attar, There are several here, but the principal one A ball indicates a typhoon to the West. of is that of Dhonda Ram. The quality of the rosewater manne fictured depends upon the number of flowers employed in the process, The bigbest quality is that which sells at 8 zupees 's, quart Boule, Each of such bottles represents the extract of some 4,000 flowers, and each measure, technic ally known as a bhapka, contains about 23 or 24 of such bottles, valued átənhout Rs, 2004. | About 75 Lakha of flowers, yielding about 5,000 bords are used in Gharipur for distillation of rosewater alone. The superior kinds cannot however, be judged from the bottle, Tha not at all so strong as one would expect, But water is then bitter in lasto and the smell ja
it is said that if you mix a spoonful of it with a pint of water, it at once becomes rosewater of good quality, The process started. with about 5,000 flowers for the first distilla- tion, As many sters of water ns are required to be distilled are put in together with loon teer for each 1,970 » of flowers, to tilled is again porop, in the still with double allow for avaporation. The water: thus disc the rdantity of flowers and as much, more water for evaporation. In each subsequent distillation. the number of flowers Immiged by ten thousand or even twenty thousand, and the process repeated till the requisite number of flowers had been used. In this way Tarze quantities of water are manufactured, but more lowest quality sells at about 8 annas a bottle of the cheaper than of the deater kinds. The

But even the cheaper qualities will bo found to compare well with imported waters of much higher price. The qualities rizs accor-- ding to the number of flowers employed and the number of disillations. But the generally approved ones are of the third and the second distillations," The most noticeable feature. about the process is its simplicity, inexpensive- nesi and in some respects its cmndeness. The wastage of material is not inconsiderable and could easily be saved with little more, care in the employment of better methods of disc
