THE PASSION FOR GAMBLING.

(Continued from page 0.)

THE CROUPIER EXPLAINS. The dice passed round the table a couple of times, when the croupier turned to the writer. | Have you got the hang of it?" "bh asked It's very simple, something like two-up. You et in and out. If the thrower chucks ven, the man who lays the oddɩ wins. There asa aix ways of getting a seven, four ways of getting a nine, four ways of getting a five, two ways of getting a ten or four, and five ways of getting a six or eight. Two açar, three, eleven, or twelve don't count. They are called Acrabs. You see, the thrower up-ends em, and if he gets a nine, say, that is the 'main.

red him, and promptly electing to ga op system of taking the odds. It was dis rous; seven times in succession seven was own, and as he wagered in half-crowns but one from the newly-cashed sovereign remained. There were muttered curses from those who bad backed the main, and some high words over a disputed shilling between two cigarette chewers. Several resorted to desperate meaty of propitiating fate, and one youth appealed several times to the Almighty that his colour might be changed. He mentioned pink as meet- ing the case if his luck did vary. Others.re- versed ir tactics, and started laying the odds. The writer's last half-crown was staked against 38 on the main and he won. The pendulum had swung round the other way, and in half-an- hour he had somewhere about 4 of money concerning the recent acquirement of which by those who bad lost it to him he did not, being A novice, care to speculate upon. Some obscene ejaculations were made while the croupier was raking the money his way, and that official re buked one loser when he hinted that the writer was tin plated.

"Those as, don't like my langwidge, can leave," said the youth pointedly. "He's got -all the gaunce."

THE PLAY LIVENS.

It was now after a o'clock, and the room was fast filling with a different class of gamester. Several youths of the clerk type, and some el. derly and middle-aged men who looked as if they had just been released from the labours of the day, drew up to the table; around which they were now standing three deep. The air reeked with the smoke of villainous cigars and asphyxiating cigarettes. The betting became more animated, and the stakes somewhat higher. Those who could not stand up to the livalier pace retired, broka, None gave in while he had a shilling. The writer's C4 had dwindled down to 2, and placing the sum with which he had entered the room in a pocket, he fired at the hazard players with their own ammunition. The expression of those about the table was now set; some faces were tensa.

"Nine's the main 1o called the croupier. "I'll take six to four."

I'll lay twelve to eight."

"Your eight bob's covered!"

And so on, in stereotyped jargon,

Sums of all sixes up to 301. were placed on the table, and covered with the odds, and the dice were once more rattled. Sixteen times they came out of the box-no sevib and no zine. The excitement was wearing, faces were twitching, and some had a dew of perspiration on them. A few were impassive. The seven- teenth throw was the main. One could feel the relaxing of nerve teaslon, but it was only momentarily. The box was up-ended and five shown as the main. A mintite for the betting, then once more nerves were strung up, and some of the paler faces showed hectic spots on their cheeks as though they were consump- tives. Three throws and seven showed. Seve tal of the gamblers rose and with them the writer, who had staked all over the sovereign that nestled in his pockel on the maina mat- ter of 165. He left the room financially the same as he had entered, and he had paid the periodical calls of is to the croupier, and two half-crowns on the occasions of two wins that seemed to entitle that'official to "a cut" as be termed it. But he was temporarily not the same physically as when he gazed at the ferret ty eyes that had, keeked suspiciously at him through the aperture in the door when he stood on the threshold of the haunt

THE PHYSICAL EFFECT. "You are trembling allover!' said the man who was "fy" of the school "You haven't caught the fever, have you?"

"Fever? Well, I canout say. It was excit ing apparently, but it must have been by in- fection. I've been playing with them for the past two hours with their own ponder, and never had any intention of taking their money away. Yet, as you say, I'm quite shaky."

"And you're flushed, too. Come and have whisky to steady you up." The drink gulped down, the writer asked how long the gamblers usually played.

Until six," he was informed, "they don't play there at night. Most of that joint will be at the two-up schools tonight-those that are not skinned. onderful how it gets hold of thers. There are men there who would game ble their last sixpence when it would buy the

meal that they were in want of. I suppose they think they would win enough when the are in such straits to buy a dinner. And there's a distinction between a meal and a dinner with
