It is reported by telegram from Yingkow to theft that the boycott started in South China against American goods extended to the Liaotung port. Sevem letters urging the interruption of American trade have been circulated, and also letters from students in Peking. Meantime, on July 31st, an Americao steamer with about six thousand cases of keresine oil arrived at Yingkow. Some of the natives tried to prevent the landing of the cargo. The Japanese Military Administrative office and the American Consul, however, pacified the Chinamen concerned, and the of was landed without further hitch. Chu Kwet. The unfortunate fellow is only funty-three years of age, but he has seen a good deal of life. He went to Honolulu at the age of eighteen, and spent some eight years there and learnt English well. Then he lived at different times in Japan, in Hongkong, and in Macan. Lately he has been teaching a school rather in one of the new colleges about which I wrote last time-in Heungshan. - There

is no doubt that he is a man of advanced viaws, and there are Whispers that he is band in glove. with Kang Yuwe. When the coolie imffic was at its height in Hongkong, he was employed by one of the firms as interpreter. It is obvious therefore, that Chu is not one of the common crowd. He has for some reason or other incurred the suspicions of the Viceroy, who has charged him with sympathising with the rebels in Kwangs, and supplying them with weapons. This charge be indignantly, denier. However, he has been arrested. When he was brought before the magistrate, ha rekised to kneel and wished to raise his hat, as foreign- ere do instead, seeing that he had eschewed the native costume for European clothes. But such request was scoffingly denied him, as was to be expected, for just then the officials were in no mood to grant him these privileges.. He was forced to kneel upon the ground. He is now lodged in the Namhoi's prison, and pro hably the chances of acquittal are precarious,
