THE COMPLEX LIFE.
BY FRANK RICHARDSON.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, AUGUST 17, 1905.
faughter rings true. Can it be that the Cam- plex Life agrees with the children of civilisa tion, just as the Simple Life suited the dweller in the cave? Would it be altogether wise to dress these women in Inegerclothes, with boots of untanned pith? Does it seem a really sound London is about to complete the triptych. of scheme to convert these beef-fed 'men isin Rome and Babylon.
We are in a bad way.
Things are going desperately with us.
The day before vesterday I returned from Ascot humbly believing myself to be an ardi nary normal bad man, one who, though he had * ainned no and off as occasion required," could
yet pars in an average crowd.

grass-eating "ebuchadnezzars? Would it he "ally good for them in the long run ? Probably not. And let the vegetarian remember that sor. row came into the world by væretarisṇiam. Had mother Eva nteferred a nice, (nie» deak o an apple-diet, things would he-well, vary; very different.
After a perusal of "Letters on the Simple Tife" found that I was all wrong. I was Yesterday morning I went for my ride in the really a salst, possibly the leading saint of our mark, a sad, stern man, wearing, the white day. It is a strange experience in return from howler of a blameless life. Around me were Alcat, & representative simple of poor human leaders of the Complex Life, up betimes, nity, and to dine at the Carlton, conscious of robust and vigorous, the fact that one is the really good man among ell those present.
-
But such was the case. Yet I was not puffed up with pride. In very truth I am a saddened minn. But the "Simple Life" has told me the most terrible things:
I have read phases such as the ostentation of riche," "mania for money." "over-rich fools," "wamen with the pastriest and some. times the most dishonourable intrigues," " flag: rant immorality," "marital dishonour," "the food fetish," pretentiousness and vulgarity,"
This is bad hearing,
North of the barracks slept the leader of the Simple Life, far-ends of humanity, unkempt. unwashed, people of slight financial status.
No one will ever lead the "Simple Life," if he have the option of leading the other-until the Japanese spirit of "Bushido" is introduced into this country.-Rangoon Times.

And with her are many allies, Things are apparently so bad with us that one prophetess alone is insufficient for the task. A syndicate of pessimists is required in this matter. Most of them ise to the occasing and put in good work. One or two, suggest entirely in- adequate remedies for so seriņus a disease. But Sir A. Conan Doyle-all honour to him-de- clines to re ognise the existence of any disorder whatsnever. A terrible experience. truly, to call in an eminent specialist to operate on you for appendicitis and for him to declare that you have no appendix at all! Sir Arthur is an honest but, clearly, alan an incompetent practitioner. The weight of expert opinion is against him. Novelists prebendaries, canons, LL.D (and there should surely know), are all firmly anti-Doyle in this matter. The creator of Sherlock Holmer cannot detect the rotten.
pess of society. Possibly, he can only discover
that which actually exists,

Columbus discovered America-a por per- formance, truly, America was there all the time. The really great discoverers, the nove lists, the prebendaries, the LL.D.'s discover that which does not exist. At least, I should like to think so. But after a course of the "Simple Life" I feel that such a belief is impossible.
Around me as I dine are "female milli- || nery-stands" sw'mped in sin, notorions evildoers, ned and unashamed doers

For them scarlet is the only want (though Sir Lewis Moris main tains that they are clothed "in diamonds and little else").
OUR JEZFBELS AND NEROS,
But it is all very sad. From table to table one's eye glances. Instructed by the "Simple Life," one sees that in this brilliant throng purity is non-existent. honour an effete, shib

Our stalls have been secured a month in advance because society is so intensely keen on getting hints from Mr. George Edwardes. But I am very stupid. I hear nothing that could help the most energetic decadent one inch towards the fatal precipice. Mr. George Grossmith's brain-products may not stir, the intellect of a deep timber in a ripe scholar, but I do not think that they would put "ideas" into the head of the most rural of rural deans. The table talk of Queen Elizabeth would have made a tramp bliựth "(a_twentieth century tramp). Her fadies-in-waiting would deem the "spring chicken" the smallest of small beer. If this nudience is being instructed in evil by Mr. George Grossmith it must be in a very elementary stage of degeneration.
Has any man ever broken up his happy home after a visit to "The Second Mrs. Tanqueray"? I fancy sat, No. Society's own. At any rate, it has not received much encouragement from Pinero, or jones, or Marshall, or Micks, or Barrie, or Grosmith. It must take upon its own shoulders the responsibility for its own initiativo. It has made a beeline for hadness. In our day the stage has little power either for good or evil. It may amuse, or it may bore. That lo all,
