TERRIBLE. DEATH OF A
ROPE-WALKER.
THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, THURSDAY, AUGUST 10. 1905.
The Act of 1739 referred to was produced, | Doric, Br. a, 2,936, H. Smith, E«N«R», 31st and there was some further discussion between the Coroner and the steward on the matter,
The Coroner, remarked that he did not know whether the regulations of tlie Act of 1739 were affected by the Act of 1874 1
The steward said that no oversees or other local officials had any powers in the Hospital, and some time ago the Lunacy Commissioners had to "give way" before this Act.
The Coroner replied that this was a different matter, for a Cotoner's Court was a court of inquiry.

A tight-rope walker met with a terrible death at Hastings, in England, recently. A large number ui holiday-makers and juwaspeople gathered in the well-known Central Recreation Ground for the purpose of witnessing a series of performances by William Henry Davidson, the American tight-rope walker. A stout rope was stretched across the ground at a height of about sixty feet. Davidson walked across it safely, with the aid of his balancing pole, and, „to all appearance, without difficulty, which was not Turprising seeing that he has had quite thirty years' experience of the business,” At the further end, he lay down on the rope and waved his legs in the air, Then he was ob served by the thousands of eyes intently watch-Amigo, Ger. .., 82z, L. Ivanion, 9th Aug.,- Ing his every movement to make a sudden twist as though to regain his foothold. Instantly the pole slipped from between his knees, where it had rested during the time that Davidson's. sumed the recumbent position, and the un happy man lost his balance. He was seen to wildly grasp at the rope. He falled to seize it, and fell with a sickening crash to the ground, which he struck. Men and women shrieked with horror and alarm, and sol a few burst into tears or became bysterical. For a moment it looked as though there would be a panic-stric ken rush for the exists, but, happily, this addi tional calamity was averted by the good sense of the majority. Among those who rushed to the assistance of Davidson was a local doctor, Mr. Geo. Locke, who happened to be on the ground. He, however, was unable to do any thing for the unfortunate acrobat, death having
been instantaneous,
At the inquest, the widow, who resides at Barking, stated that decensed was 45 years of age, and had been a performer on the tight-rope for 35 years During a period of 24 years he had not used a protection net, except at the Crystal Palace and Hanley. Fourleen years ago he had an accident through the rope break- fag. He was dull at times, but not nervous.
Mr. Henry Forrest, show proprietor, of Forest Gate, London, said deceased was engaged by him on April 20th, he engagement extended: to five months, the salary being s 10. a week. Performances had been given at Brom. ley, St. Mary Cray, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge, Bat tle, and Hastings. At each of these places Davidson had walked the wire soft, from the ground, and sometimes a little higher. Before
deceased began the performance on the day of his death, he tested the rope, for the erection of which he was himself responsible. He was on the rope for seven minutes, walking the length backwards and forwards. He then sat down, and steadying bimself, lay on his back: He had just pulled up his knees when his ☛- balancing pale ■'ipped his fingers, ard he im
mediately fell.Deceased always refused to have a net, because it would take away the novelty of the exhibition,
A juror raised the question of the velocity of the wind, but witness said Davidson had per- formed in worse weather, and that at Waltham stow he walked the rope in a thunder-storm.
The Coroner: There is a law which pre-] vents children from giving dangerous per- formances, but that does not apply to people over eighteen years of age.
An eye-witness snid the performer was lying on his back with the pole on his knee. The pole seemed to slip, then Davidson, over- balanced..
xệ Dr, Locke, who saw Davidıon fall, stated that death was instantaneous, from a broken Deck, From the state of the internal organs, as revealed at the postmortem examination, it was evident that deceased might had had an accident at any time.
The Coroner said death evidently was ac cidental The question of allowing such daa gerous performances was a matter for Legisla. ture, and he recommended that in future efforts should be made to prevent such per- formances in Hastings.
The jury returned & verdict of "Accidental death," with the recommendation that such performances should rot be allowed.
LONDON POUNDLINGS AND THEIR NAMES,
Some curious evidence was given at St. Pancras Coroner's Court, London, recently, in the case of the death, due to a fall, of a little girl of six years, all inmate of the Foundling Hospital Her name was given as Susan The steward of the Hospital gave evidence of identification, and was asked by the coroner how the child get her name.
Estall.
:
Whness: 11 was bestowed by the governors of the hospital. Witness explained that this was done under an Act of Parliament of 1739.
This Act obliged the Governors to discard the name which the child might have reen chris tened by its presents; and to give the child a
new Christian name and surname,
How came the child to be admitted? She was admitted in the application of the mother.
Are the parents of the children notified when death occurs?
