QUE BUDDHIST RUINS IN JAVA.
If most people were asked to name "those countries of the world in which are still to be Found spléndid architecristal iémoirs of hye- gone civilisations, says a correspondent of the Globe, the names of Egypt, India, Syria, and Mexico, would at once bo forthcoming bot few would place the island of Java on the list) yet not one of these could show ruini more numerous or mare splendid. This may secin an exaggeration, but the same opinion has been universally expressed by the most eminent writers on the subject. As to the date of the rise and fall of a civilisation which has left behind it such splendid memorials authorities are much at variance, but for the most Lars they are placed between the begin ning of the Eighth or Ninth centuries of our era. Certain it.js, however, that at one time the leland must have been ruled by a Hindu or Buddhist people far advanced in the arts of Architecture and sculpture.
Among the Guest and best preserved of these | ruins the great temple known as the Tyandi -Buabudur situated near the centre of Java in the Sultanate of jokfakarta.riginally de- signed probably as a dagaba resting place, for ponion of the ashes of Buddha "this build- ing, rises in the form of a terraced pyramid, | the part at present above ground being about 350 feet square by about 12 feet high. The terraces at present visible are seven in number, the whole being surmounted by a dome thirty feet in height. ach of these ter races is covered on the inner wall formed by the terrace above, and in the tower terraces also an outer walls running round them by a series of bas-reliefs, which for extent, variety, and artistic merit lave probably not their equals in the world. Kunning in a double tier round the lower galleries and in a single tier round the upper anes, they are estimated to have a total length of over three miles and re present by a continuous series of pictures not only the bath and life of the i ord Buddha in his final incarnation, bôt also a large number of the "jatakas," or previous lives, of the Mas ter in the grada lly ascending forms of animats and of ecu in various positions in life, and re- cord his gent dende in rech of those lives, Thus we inve the story of the Kadhisatva when on earth in the form of a late. Indra the Lord
of Heaven, in the form of atraveller, weary and hungry, comes down to test the virtues of the various beasts. He receives fish from un siter,

terrace, but that with the building partly completed, and the first set of sculptures stiff uplahed, the builders found that their foundations were founk for the huge struc. ture, and were obl ged to sacrifice onë terrace to strengthen them. ilad not this been necessary the building wild have stood up even more colossal than it is. The temple of Barabudur is only one among many in Java Atthe village of Prambanam, also nee Djokjakarta, are the ruins known as 'Chandi war the "Thousand Temples," consisting of an outer parallelogram of 84 small temples, a second of 76, a third of 6. fourth of 44, and a fifth, inner one, of 28; in all 296 smalltemples in five ,concentric parallelogranis. In the centre is a Targe and beautifully ornamented cruciformioner temple. Most of the smaller temples are in ruins, but some are still fairly perfrei.
At Loto-Jongran, clust by, are fourteen swall and six large temp es to Hindu deities; Siva, Durga, mid Ganesh being still represented by finely carved statues A Gunong Praw an extensive plateau reached in farmer times by four flights of stone stairs, each of over a thou
and steps on the North, South, East, and West are remains of nearly four hundred temples and Le quote Wallace again, "the whole country between here and Prambanam, a distance of Sixty miler, ubounds with ruins, so that fine sculptured imagespay be seen lying in diches, dr bullt into the walls of enclosures." The bove buildings are all of a religious charac. Ter, but others may have been used for lay pur. Boses such as the so-called "Water Casile' in the city of Djakjakana itself, where may be seen the remains of high walled enclosures with brand tunks, now overgrown with weeds, but still showing their stone terraces and the plone steps leading to the water, having pro bably originally formed the pleasance of some Hindu potentate, or possibly, form their very bigh walls of his harem. In other parts are many mins of forts, palaces, baths, and aqueducts, and at Modjo Agong, over a large stretch of country, every road, and pathway shows a foundation of finely laid brickwork, the paved streets of some old city of which odly traces now remain. Que thing is notice. able in all this architecture; like the ancient Breaks, the builders knew nothing of the ex treme uillity of the arch in masonry, conse. quently few roofs remala, but in some places, Es at Mendoet near Barabudur, complete roofs romain, made by horizontal courses of masonry, each over-lapping the one below it till they meet at the apex. Of course, the roof for this has to be very high for the breadth spanned, but for small spans the system serves a pur- pose fairly, well. From the above description. It will be seen that if some of the energy spent on Pompeil and Egypt could be spent on ex- cavations in Jara, discoveries of the greatest importance night be made. It is to be hoped that the money will some day be found for this purpose. :
