Arriving at the Convent punctually at half past four, His Ex- cellency and party were received by the Rev. father, and conducted to the hall, when the proceedings at once began according to th Programme below. The hall had been ver elegantly decorated with palms, pot plants and bunting, and it presented a very gay and. lively appearance when all had taken their places.

For most purposes this will suffice, but the girl who has achieved so much success will probably not be satisfied but will want to make her compositions pleasurable to read. For this she must remember that as talking is everyday.song so is writing everyday poetry; harmony must be studied and discor dant sounds avoided. Such sounds are inhar monious words, the unmusicnt repetition, in one sentence, ofthe same words and arrangement of words, which is not actually ungrammatical, are inelegant, for instance, split-infinitives, and the termination of a sentence by a preposition. I will leave the English teacher to explain by ex- amples to any girls whom I may have interested in these matters how such errors are to be avoided, as well as how they may improve their writing by balancing their sentences, lo troducing apt parallels, picturesque iliustra tions, and effective quotations. I will close these remarks, I trust before they have be coma sedious, by emphasising the bene. ficent effect on writing which results from the reading of good books, and by presaming the works of a master of style to the girl who is most likely to profit by their perusal that is to the girl who has shown the greatest promise in ber english compositions (loud applause.)

Before you begin a letter or an ensay you bould have a di tinct idea of what you are going to write, and how you are going to arrange it. For instance, in a letter you will probably first refer to one you have received from the person to whom you are writing and you will answer any questions that it may contain. Next you will go on to say what you have been doing, seeing, hear ing, or reading and make your remarks on the events or books. Then you will ask any ques tions you may wish to put to your correspon dent. This is only one arrangement of many that might be made and I only mention it to explain that there should be some order in the way you put down your thoughts. In an essay it is of more importance that the ideas should not fly about from one part of the subject to another. The different parts should be kept in separate paragraphs and the paragraphs should lead on from one to another in a natural order. A frequent cause of books being dry and dull to read is that this rule is not followed the story does not, as it were, flow on in a patur way. fast in the same way that you should arrange the different parts of your subject to your mind before you commence writing, you should ar range your sentences before you put there down in order that they may fulfil the first require ment of style, that is, be clear. The posing was not exactly classical, being designed rather to exhibit the muscular development than the beauty of a living sculpture.
