Cash sales have tion does not, however, appear in be quite been made a Tis. 47. Internationala are wante satisfactory as it should be, but it will improved. Seey-Chees are in demand. with the development of the country,Sir William Macgregor, while Guvernor of British New Guinea, expressed the greatest confidence in the future of the colony, and his opinions. were navar voiced unless sound and solid rex- Bons could be adduced in support of them. Australia looks upon New Guinea as an outpost of the Federation. It lies defenceless, a ready prey to any country or combination of forces which might rise againt Great Britain, and the teal Australian spirit is shown in this sentence taken from the Sydnay Telegraph "To pre vent it from becoming a joint d'appui for arm. ed enemies of White Australia, it behoves us to do all within our power to promote its oc- cupation by people of our own race. The natural resources of New Guinea are described, and the possibilites of the country for battlers, and the profusion of labour indicated. But from a political point of view the great thing in to fortify New Guinea so that bent on attacking vulnerable ustralia might receive a check at the very outset of operations. With New Guinen peopled and ruled by while eattlers, whose interests would be bound up with the interests of the Commonwealth, and with Timor standing neutral, or, preferably, under the Union Jack, then Australia could feel tolerably safe from foreign invasion, por would the people be haunted by the knowledge that there was an enemy at the gates.
