the chances of a shell striking a vessel.
In the morning the tide is low, and so much" hull shows that it is difficult to realise that they are all hopelessly foundered. But as the water slowly fills the harbour there is no responsive movement in these broken monarche of the deep. Gradually the incoming tide creeps up the stained and battered sides, floods the lower decks and then balts, as if in mercy. Then the waters subside, to return again in kindly an deavour. But they cannot float those swamped ships, once so buoyant, now resting so heavily in the lapping waycı.
The naval authorities are kind enough to furnish me with a steam-launch to go round the harbour. I stand in the bows of the boat and am borne slowly past the sunken vessels,.. They show little signs of extensive damage: The aftermast of one lies across the decks, a smokestack on another is completely wrecked. Here and there the superstructure of heavy. steal plating is twisted and smashed by bursting projectiles. And several of the long poniard.. like guns have lost soma feet of their langths, can find only one or two cases of shell pane trating the bull. Several of the ships, though, one Hongkong Telegraph Office not later than show evidence of the explosions that sunk them, in the blasted and bulging appearance of the plates.
