THE WORK DONE.
Truly the French were well out of this terrible problem, which before long will bring serious distention into the American Cabinet. The officials are almost suhamed to show all the rattages and insignificant ware- houses and offices, formerly owned by the Cabal Company, and which are all they have. to show in return for the many millions ex- ponded. As regards Iron, the principal discovery that has been made is situated about 40 miles inland from the lay of Sandakan, on the east coast of the island, and the engineer who reported to the syndicate on the find estimated that there were fully 1,500,000 tons of ore exposed on the surface alone Sam ples taken from various points indicate this. ore to be of excellent quality, an average of eight samples having shown 63 per cent. of metallic iron. Another discovery of iron has recently been made about 35 miles inland due south of the manganese deposits. This is stated to be a rich depasit covering a large area, and an assayed sample gave 57. per cent, of metallic iron. We have now received a bulk sample of about five tons of blue ground, and we are taking the necessary steps to have the same washed to ascertain whether it is diamondiferous or not. A discovery of smoke- less coal was recently reported by Mr. Robert Mon to have been, made at Jetnbongon, which is a small island north-east of Borneo. We are carrying on active prospecting aperations to locate the seam from which this coal must have come, and the shareholder, will be advised of any developments of importance. In addition to the minerals I have mentioned, indications have from time to time been reported of gold, tin, wolfram, chromite sand, antimony, and copper. We have therefore abundant prool that the territory covered by the concession is rich in mineral values, and should amply repay our expenditure in prospecting and 'develop ing the same. (Applause.)
