ART OF PRINTING IN MANILA,

"An interesting and instructive book has first. been published in Spanish, under the title of Adiciones y continuacion de la 'mprenta en

Manila"

la 1896, Jose T. Medina, wrote and publish- ed in Santiago de Chile, his famous work on the nut of printing in the Philippines, from the time of its first settlement to Bro. The pro sent work' in an addition and continuation of

that work, and contains moreover a long list of inedited manuscripts and other papers of great interest and historical value, preserved in the Archives of the various convents in this city, especially in the archives of San Pablo, of the Augustinians.

The joint authors of the work are Fathers Angel Perez, already known to students of ethnology, by his siudy recently published on the Igorots, the second volume of which is now being published under the auspices of the ethnological survey, Department of the Interior and Father Cecilla Guemes. Both of these writers have spent a number of years in the Philippines, the former at and the lalter

11, and during the last few years, while con fined to the enclosure of their convent in the Walled City, have devoted a large part of their time to the study of the subject of their publi. cation.

..

After a careful desertation on the antiquity of the art of printing in the archipelago, and upon the great civilizing effect it had upon the semi-civilized peoples of the archipelago, the authors give in a condensed form, Medina's catalogue of 404 publications, following with their 83r additions and continuations, the dates of the latter being from 1,612 to the present day.

In the catalogue there appear the names of 1,143 writers of whom 395 were peninsular Spaniards, 141 Filipinos, 94 Europeans other than Spaniards, to Americans of North and South America, and 1 an Asiatic,

A large percentage of the publications men- tioned in the listare grammars and dictionaries of the native languages and dialects. The first two hooks known to have been printed in the Philippines were catechism for the spiritual Instruction of the unenlightened natives,

These publications first appeared in 1593. the first being in Tagalog-Spanish, with text in Latis, and printed on the first press estab"

"Hahed in Manila, that of the Dominican Fathers. The second came from the same press and was in Chinese characters. la 1610 there appeared the first graminar of the Tagalog language, followed' in 1613 by a vocabulary in the same language, the first from the pen of the famous student of Tagalog, Father Francisco de San Joseph, a Dominican. who after many years of careful study, put the Tagalog dialect into such form as to make it possible as a language in which literature could be written. He printed his grammar on rice paper, in cuarto, consisting of 312 pages.

The vocabulary is from the pen of Father Pedro de San Buenaventura, a Franciscan, another of the many students of the Tagalog and of other native langonges who have made them what are to-day. The catalogue con tains books on almost every koown subject, including history, geography, works an theology, philosophy and science of every description. Covering as it does the history of Philippine literature for a period of 410 years, ht in a study well worthy of a place in the choicest libraries, and does great credit to its studious authors—Manila Coblenews.

The abstract philosophical conception of li. berty is well enough when it is not checked by facts. In the cass of marriage there in auch A check in the fact that the disastrous conse- quences of too close inter-breeding are patent, and acknowledged in those days by all. To one respect our marriage law does not observe a sound physiological basis. It permits the mar zinge of first cousines and this example leads ...d to say that the law ought to be altered, not by extending the liberty of marriage, but by refusing to permit it in this instance of close relationship. Although the law permits the marriage of cousias, public opinion does not favour these marriages, which for the most part

· are arranged for pecuniary or material family “reasons rather than on the sentiment accepted

the proper basis of the matrimonial relation ship. There are these marriages of cousins, sad an appreciable number of uncles and nieces either by consanguinity or affinity enter into illegal matrimonial union; but in alther case would the opinion be healthy which “would be pleased to have them lagalised it would be better to prohibit both. Indeed, if there is ever he slightest physiological basis for blood rela- Ellonship, the presumption is in favour of pro- hibition and there is an hypothesis or, pre- Wamption 24 to the relationship of a man, and | Fri, the sister of his deceased wife sufficient to Kitake the prohibition ressonabis,
