Th

FRIGHTFUL CHILD MASSACRE.

A homible story of child-massacre due to superstitious beliefs comes Moscow, Two women of gigantic stature took a furnished house in the principal street of the village of Dabovo and their behaviour was so singular as to cause continual gossip. They soldom went out in the daytime but were often seen in town and out on the country roads at night. On. `. last Christmas day the four-year-old daughter of a blacksmith mysteriously disappeared į, while carrying his midday meat

forge. The whole place and the surrounding country were scoured in vain, for no trace of the little one was found. Five days later, the baby daughter of an lonkeeper vanished. On Feb. 4 the twin children of a widow went to slide on a pond but failed to return. Search. Gresulted in the discovery of a large hole in the ice, but the bodies of the children could not be found. During the month of March five more children un accountably vanished.

On the 21st April the solution of the terrible mystery carne. Screams were heard in the home of the two women. Suddenly the door new open and they appeared locked in each others arms, bleeding and dishevelled. They were fighting desperately, but eight strong". Tabourers carried them, clawing and screaming like furies, to the police station. A caretaker was sent to their house, but a few minutes later "ahe was seen leaving the house in a paroxysm of fear. The house was soon thronged with a crowd of curious people. They discovered in the cellar a long table furnished with clamos and strops. A cabinet on the wall containeil surgical knives, while one end of the room was covered with shelves filled with bottles. Far-Pingking, for Canton. ther search revealed the body of a baby girl

who had disappeared eight days before.

Upon examination of the two prisoners they stated that they had come to the place to pro- secute scientific research. They belonged to a secret society which had for its main object the discovery of the Elixir of Life. They con sidered child-life cheap in comparison with the importance of their discoveries. "The women were then fastened by strong chains to an iron bar in the wall of their cell. The next morn ing it was discovered that they had escaped during the night in the clothes of their gaolers, Both of whom were found dead with their heads battered in and their throats cut. The women are still at large.

WOMAN 171 YEARS OLD.

A remarkable case of longevity is intanced

by the "Canadian Gazette," which records that

a Chinese woman passed through Muntreal the

other day who claimed to be 171 years old. She had nothing in prove her age, only the word of her friends added to her own, but her appearance was most eloquent and certainly tended to confirm ber remarkable ata'ement. As an official put it, she seemed as if she had been dug out of the great wall of Chinn, built some 5,000 years ago. She was on her way home from Demerara to China, in order to make her last resting-place in the Celestial Kingdom, because the feared she had not Amany mara years to live. She was bent nearly double, and herface looked like crinkled yellow parchment. It appears that she left China when seventy years old, and has resided in De- merara for the last hundred years.

BACHELOR WHO BECAME A PRIZE.

How a Kansat City (U: S, A.) girl of „eighteen, Miss Katherine Knoche, won a hus. band as the prize in a lottery is related by the "Brooklyn Eagle." A local society having advertised as a feature of an entertainment that a young man would be offered at the first prize in a raffle, an immense audience assemble in the hall. The prize,” a' young Virginian | rain squalls. named Arnett, stood on the platform. When the winning number was read out Miss Knoche stepped forward and claimed him, while the crowd cheered frantically. A suggestion that the pair should be married on the spot was received with acclamation. When order bad been restored, the chairman said to them. "Do you want to be married here now?" Who "prize" pulled himself together, and in the expressive language of his country re- plied: "It's up to her. Whatever she says goes. I'm game."
