THE SURVEY VESSELS. of the Royal Navy, and is commanded by | Capt. B. Somerville, with whom will be argociated,; for purposes of, scientific, work, Messre. J. S. Gardiner and C. F: Coeper. The expedition was to leave Colombo on April 20, Its objects are to investigate thoroughly the hydrography and biology of the central and western parts of the Indian Ocean which was not visited by H. 'M. S. Challenger. Since the cruise of the Challenger, which lay south, almost to the fringe of the Antarctic Circle,
much has been done to familiarize scientific men with many parts of the Indian Ocesa. Ceylon, the East Indies, the waters from the Pacianes and the dives, the Malance, the Laccadives Maldives, the Madagascar coast, with their numerous islands and banks, and the region of the Seychelles, with their varied marine flora and fauna, have all been more or less brought within the sphere of certained knowledge.
EXTENT OF THE CRUISE, › The object of the new expedition is, broadly speaking, to correlate, as far as may be, and to co-ordinate the results of these various preced- ing and mutually independent expeditions, On leaving Ceylon, the Sealark will first direct her course for the group of coral atolls, and submerged banks known as the Chagos Archi- pelago, of which we have no clear data more receat than 1837, thez.ce, after careful and ex- tensive hydrographical work, to Mauritius in MESSRS, HUGHES AND HOUGH have August for store, and from this point to the surface reef of Cargados, and onward along the Beychelles group and. "QUESTIONS FOR SETTLEMENT. Foremost among the scientific results hoped for from the expedition is the determination, by soundings and temperature texts, of such questions as the existence of any relatively shallow banks connecting India with South Africa, or Mauritius with the Seychelles, the mutual relationships of the Chagon atolls, the general, ocean changes that may have taken place since the last surveys, and the nature of- the currents at various depths. For this pur pose captains of many British steamers have for some time been collecting information re Jing to the surface waters in different parts of the ocean. The biological section of the work will include examination, by means of frequent dredging of the polagic fora and fauna, not only of the ocean bed and Af varlaus | depths from go to goo fathome, but on sil parts: of the coral reefs visited. In this way is i the 6th Juna, 1903, at 3 F.M., at the promises, hoped to obtain some clear idea of the vertical distribution of both animals and plants, and to abtain a definite comparative Impression as to the mutual relations of the flora and fauna of the various parts of the ocean, with a view and lands.
