Since those early days she has become a famous explorer, and under the command of Sir Alen Young bottled with the ice in the Polar regions. In fact, it was whilst on this very vessel that famous explorer received his knighthood. Her surveying work In the Magellan Straits is one of her many other achievements. The yacht--for that is

what she is now-is

A ROOMY OLD VESSEL, built of oak and teak, copper fastened right through, and built on beautiful lines. She is as sound In fact to-day as on the day she was built, and in her outside coat of ivory, white enamel she is perhaps more beautiful than ever she was. The captain and owner of this wonderful vesicl-for hi recently purchased her from Mr. Coasta, of Paisley-is Mr. T. C. Kerry, the pioneer explorer of New Guinea. The "Pandora" has just made a inp direct from England to the island of Tristan d'Acunha. Mr. Kerry has been granted by the Colonial Office a lease of Inacessible, Gough, and Nightingale Islands, and he went out there for the purpose of examining the guano de posits and to make peprations for working

TRISTAN D' CUNHA

The island of Tristan d'Acunha which is ́almost as benutifuf as its name, liés hallway between Cape Horn' and the Cape of Good Hope. Its position is such that it misses both

the eastern and the western ships. Its chief visitors are whalers, which sometimes call for provisions and water, and yearly the Cape Government versel, which takes over mails and clothing for these hardy islanders. His tory has only touched it at two different pe- riods. In 1506 it was discovered by the Par tuguese navigator who gave it its name. in 1816, when Napoleon was taken to St. Helena, a company of British artillery was placed here to keep watch (over the 1,500 miles of sea) on

THE GREAT PRISONER'S MOVEMENTS. No rescue expedition appeared, and the gar rison after an uneventful five years, was with drawn. Four of the soldiers, however, had come to like the life, and at their request they were permitted to remain there with their wives. They cultivated the land, an in due course of time the colony grow, and in 4819 there were 27 people, Little mure was heard of the island until the Chalinger visited it in October, 1873, and found that the inhabitants bad increased to 79. the cattle to 600, and the shoop to about the saine number,

They still maintain relations with their friends, but the supply of clothing is ludí- crously inadequate. Only a few of the men have jackets, and most of their garments are hopelessly outworn. The women, whom Mr. Kerry describes as comely, are a little better off. This strange little community have no money, no churches, and no law. They grow potatoes and vines, but n3 corn or wheat. The island is cursed with rais, which destroy all hope of crops. There is a fine supply of water, the cattle are good, and there is a plentiful supply of fish.

TWO MEN ON AN ISLAND.

The other islands in the Tristan group are Inaccessible, Nightingale, and Cough Íslands, over which Mr. Kerry's concession extends, Inaccessible island, which is 10 miles away, hardly deserves its tile, as two German sailora lived there a kind of Crusoe existence for nearly two years. They had several opportunities to leave, but re used in move until the Challenger came in 1876. Penguin, puto, albatross, booby-birds, and reagulls live here in thousands. The island is a lofty mass of rock, with sides two miles in length. The Nightingale Islands are three in number, af which the largest is one mile long and three. quarters of a mile wide, and rites in two peaks of 960 and 1,105 fest above the sea level re- spectively.
