THE HANKOW THA SEASON. -

"GANG WARILY.".

It will be in the recollection of all those in. terested in th: article, that though the opening of the market last year was attended by little or no excitement, yet buyers exhibited unwont- ed anxiety to fill their orders, which word chiefly for common teat at a price that subse quently turned out to be too full, viz., dd, per ib.; a course of action based only on the bellef that Russia, unable to get her usual supply direct by reason of the exigencies of war, would be compelled to have recourse to the London market. To some extent this expectation was fulfilled, but not to that anticipated, for the direct export to the United Kingdom which teached the large total of 25,500,000 lbs, was only lessened by the re-export of 13,030,000 lbs. thus making the net shipments to London 17,500,000 lbs., à quantity even largely in excess of requirements, when it is borne in mind that the monthly deliveries barely average 1,100,000 lbs, while those for the past tiree months have fallen in go0,000 lbs. ; in fact, the actual deli very for the month of April was only 8:0000 lbs, at which rate it would take ten months to get rid of the existing stock.

It is doublless true that a moderate quantity of low to ordinary Congous costing from 41d. to 5 per h was turned over at a slight mar-

gin of profit, and also that a few thousand pack. ages were sold e. f. at 4. per lb. for tranship. ment in Continental ports, hut the wander is that such should have been the case, as never, perhap, has the stock in London comprised so preponderating a quantity of really good teas at such abnormally low prices as have ruled for the past six months. For instance,

The no ticeable feature in the list of the Hupah and and Hunan native lea hungs is the great in crease in those producing the commonest Oonahms, Shuntan, Lieling, Kokew, as also the lower Oopacks. There is therefore every promise of a superabundant supply of common tea, and though the total North China yield will possibly prove to be ten per cent. less than fast year, 1905 will probably be chilk-marked as the largest "common tea! season ever known.
