in his teens. In the intervals of his drills he will be employed for hours, much to the soil. ing of hi self-respect, in performing the scullery-work of the officers and sergeants' messes, the claring of barrack refuse, scrub bing of floors, and cleansing after-cans in the wet" canteen. wear of it when seeking recreation, but the knowledge that, on his leaving and returning to barracks, he is subject to inspections, and in town it under the eagle eye of the military police, not to mention officers in multi and non-commissioned offrers, that will induce him to spend his long evenings in future in the miserable barrack-room, providing the canteen Attracts him not.
Such are some lew of the discordant facto
opening out on the vista of the y un sensitive recruit, in his first few months of Army life. The change from the confort of home life to Army life is a very sharp ane; from being an individual with caring companions, and com fortable, harmonising surroundings, he at once becomes a mere unit among inany, unconsi- dered, left to fall or fight alone, and in an en- viragment suited to the lowest strata Gradu. ally he begins to realise that he is no more a man, but a machine, every condition antici- pated, every necessity supplied, but with the shed-like comfort and as much sympathy as the soulless machine receives. Tet ill-health diminish his working value, and he is citalo- gued, paraded, and inarched for inspection by the doctor; similarly, he is paraded and march. ed to church, whatever his religious convic tions he is inspected at his meals, and at all bls goings and comings. He is in a new and un- natural world of class, fine distinctions, and enforced worship, where the heart, may be otherwise.

He will gain a little of the soldier, tose much of the man.
The soldier at beart will learn to accept un questioningly all that offers, and become part of it; but in the other case retentment, that may, easily become active, will surely mature. The one sheds his wings; the other is for ever beating them against the bars of his cage. If you could quite confine the latter he would at length become a stubborn, stolid, feather- less creature, obeying force, but no longer
reason; but whilst ways and means exist he will escape, somehow. Even the intentional soldier rarely develops into the ideal, becausa bis treatment lowers him to the level of the conscripts he is not allowed to develop naturally as a volunteer, The poor recruit who is not a soldier might have warmed into one by careful tending, but he is entirely killed by the shower of ice-cold water he meets in- stead. He can become a froren, solid object, but got a warm, thinking, contented one.
He has no one to turn to for sympathy at guidance. His sergeant has matured from all these evils into a machine of only slightly con sidered importance and individuality, and, in his precious privileges and status, becomes ofteo a different creature of chill indifference. The officer exists in an atmosphere of his own; unattainable. His superiority partakes of the nature of the individual looking out from the top story of a skyscraper on poor crawling buraanity below. To many such the men are the mere signs of their occupation, and the means wherewith their sense of Importance and power are flattered All honour to sterling exceptions which ulumphantly prove the rule. The soldier #don understands that bis former freedom has been replaced by dependence to the full on all around him, and, for the amelioration of all difficulties, solely on bim self.
