In those words, cabled from Victoria Falls Brlegovia, Get. *.9., 6,667, C. A. Russ, 17th Rubi, B., 1,611, A. H. Notley, 15th May, Capte, and Morrison, Mr B

on Saturday, Sir Charles Metcalfe, the British

South Africa Company's consulting engineer is Rhodesia, announced the virtual completion of the most wonderful piece of bridge-building the world has known.

Sixteen hundred miles from Capetown the -course of the great railway from the Cape to Cairo, the dream of Cecil Rhodes, was stopped by the Zambesi just below the Victoria Falls which are twice the hight and more than double the width of Niagara,

Modern engineering :has. achieved many

marvels, but to build a sapp it for the great bridge at the font of the gorge was one of the few things impossible even to the modern angineer.

The only alternative was a single-span steel cantilever bridge 50 feet long and an high above the water-line that if St. Paul's Cathedral were, in imagination, placed below the span, there would still be a space of fifty-five fees between the cings and those hattom girders of the bridge which were bolted together on Saturday morning.

UNTERING. ACCURACY,

The work of building this wonderful bridge was begun from each bank in the summer of last year by Sir Charles Cox and Partners, the British South Africa Company's engineers, and

by slow degrees and with unerring nccuracy bay has been added to bay-ten bays from each and until at last the girders have "met exactly," in the words of Sir Charles Metcalfe's cable, and an exceedingly delicate feat of engineering has thus been triumphantly ac complished.

When the bridge is completed and the track faid, the railroad will pass through some of the most remarkable scenery in the world. The. tremendous depth to which the water all 420ft-causes a vapour cloud, which often rizes Over 1,000ft, from the water line.

For one thing, Mr. Simon says he can no longer re.

Mr. Simon also recommends the appointment of a Mr. Pesch to a suitable position in the new administration. He says he found him quietly conducting the only school on the island, res pected by all, and on the mot friendly terms with the president, Mr. Alfred Young, and with Mr. McCoy himself.

A POPULATION OF 169. The Pitcairn islanders number 77 males and ga females, including children and infants, of whom 63 males and 73 females are now resid. ent on the island. They are, says Mr. Simon, a hardworking people, more or less healthy, exhibiting certain vicinus tendencies which religion has been unable to eradicate. Many of them are narrow-minded and unstable. They have adopted an extraordinary "palois (derived from the language of the Tahitian women who accompanied the mutineers of the Bounty to Pitcairn Island), which is employed in conversation among themselves, although most of the adults can speak the English language fairly well-in some instances very well, considering their circumstance and environment. There are persons of ability among them, but a few appear to be lacking in Intelligence. The chlidren and young people are numerous, and if properly cared-for should turn out useful members of the community. With regard to the morals of the islanders, in the aggregate, Mr. Simon fears he can say little in their favour. Illegitimate children, petty thefis, - brawis, bad language, eic, are come moa among them (happily they do not use' Intoxicante), and it was disquieting to learn that the laws and regulations dealing with those offences h·d'saldom been enforced. Mr. Biman discovered no deformities among the people, but the front teeth of most of them are bad-the only visible result of their later marriage with each other."

RELIGION.

Some years ago the Pitcairn Island com- munity embraced the faith of the Seventh Day Adventists, a religious sect having its origin and bead-quarters in the United States. On their Sabbath day, in the observances of which they are scrupulous, the Pitcairn Islanders, dressed in their best and looking clean and wholesome, make a favourable "impression. They are exemplary in their attendance at weekday prayer meetings' and church gather' ingas but, nevertheless, vulgar stories and tx clamations and obscène songs are not unknown to them. The Pitcair, people contribute ten per cent, of thair produce and of any money they may receive as a tube to the Church, and' they pay subscriptions to the Sabbath School, and other religious fonde. Mr. Simon under- "stands that the produca so contributed" is sold, and the proceeds, together with other cash collections, are forwarded to the Foreign Miss alon Board of the Adrontals in America.
