ing individual gifts to a scrutiny not beretofors regarded as practicable for a mission board to exercise. We do not, therefore, 'consider that the acceptance of this gift compromises the Board in any way, and we cannot recom- mand any departure from the long-established usage of the Hoard receiving, with thankfulnes the funds entrusted to its cire for the prosecu. tion of its important work!

Mark Twain, the veteran humourist, is not behindhand in the discussion, which he caps with the following satire, written to an Ame rican Journal over the pen name of "Satan":- ∙10 THE EDITOR OF · 'HARPER'S WEEKLY,"

Dear Sir and Kinsman.—Let us have done. with this frivolous talk, The American Board accepts contributions from me every year; then why shouldn't it from Mr. Rockefeller? In all ages three-fourths of the support of the great charities has been conscience money, as my books will show; then what becomes of the Bring when that term is applied to Mr. Rocke- feller's gift.

The American Board's made is financed mainly from the graveyards -bequests, you understand cons ience money. Confession of an old crime and deliterate perpetration of A new one; for deceased's contribution is a robbery of his heirs, hall the Board decline beques's because they thank for one of these offences every time and generally for both?

Allow me to continue. The charge most persisterly and resentfully, and remorselessly dwelt upon is dat Rockefeller's contribu tion is incurably tainted by perjury-per- jury proved against him in the Courts, It makes us aile-down in my peace.. because there is not a rich man in our vast cities who ines. Lot perjure himself every year before the tax board. They are all caked with perjury many layers thick. If there is one that isn't desire to acquire him for my museum und will pay dinosaur rates. Will you say it isn't infraction of the law, but only Annual evasion of it? Comfort yourselves with that nice faclination if you like for the present. But by and by, when you arrive, I will show you something inter esting a whole hell full of cvaders. Bometimes a frank lawbreaker turus ap else. where, but I get those others every time,
