A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at prosent in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of mastere of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces."

A cone point upwards indicate, a typhoon to the North of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and drum below in- dicates a typhicon to the North-East of the Colony,

A drum indicatos a typhoon to the East of the Colday,

A cone point. downwards and drom below indicates a typhoon to the South East of the Colony.

A cone point downwards indicates a typhoon to the South of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the South-West of the Colony.

A ball indicates a typhoon to the West of the Colony,

A cone pelat upwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the North-West of the Colony.

Red Signals indicate that the centre la believed to be more than-300 miles' away from the Colony.

Black Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be less than 300 miles away from: b the Colony.

The above signals will,, as heretofore, be hoisted only when typhoons exist in such posie tions or are moving in such directions that in formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav ing the harbour,

NIGHT SIGNALS

Two lanterne hoisted vertically indicate und weather in the Colony ard that the wind' is expected to veer.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Harbour Office and on M's Receiving Ship,
