The Emperor meant to pay him the beautiful compliment of making him the guar- dian of the Prince Imperial's three little sons, But first there was other work to do. So with his war-worn velerans Nogi was hurried from Port Arthur up to Mukden, where we are told he hurled himself like a thunderbolt upon the Russians. there is some merit in that. I believe it willingly ; not only do I believe it, but I know it. As far as I am concerned, the retreat was not unforeseen.
