WORK ON THE D, 5, 53" LISCUM?
AT THE KOWLOON DOCKS.NET Some interesting work has been in progress at the Hongkong and Wham oa Docks in con nection with the United States transp it ship Liscum, which has just been converted from a transport vessel into a telegraph ship and will therefore have to carry many miles of cable in her hold.
The cable is coiled down into large circular tanks from which it can run out over the en- orm sus pully or fair-lead in the stern with as much freedom as possible. The conversion of a transport into a cable ship is no mean task and involves extens ve ́al enutjon" and "reconstruc- | 22ndtion so much so in fact, that it speaks very well for the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company that the Un te tates should have entrusted theur with such an undertaking, Besides the enormous cable tans many other fittings nutt be found in the vidinary cargo steamer had to be placed on board and so dis posed as to be out of the way of the cable as it runs overboard.

Germany, France and Morocco. Later details do not diminish in any way the deliberateness of the Emperor of Ger many's intervention in Morocco. The cor- respondent of The times at Tangier says that the Kaiser, in his conversation with the Sultan's representative, said that the present was not a suitable time to introduce Kuro- pean reforms, which should be wholly founded on the Islamic law and traditions, and that he would find means Inter on for communicating his opinion to the Moorish Government on questions of detail. He would never allow any other Power to act as an intermediary between Germany and the Sultan.

The Osaka Shosen Kaisha has chattered the Apenrade and six other foreign steamers for its serv ces, in place of those chartered to the Government for thetransportation of prisoners

A brief description of such a vessel will therefore not be out of place. The cable tanks, of course, are built into the hold; they are of nearly the same diameter as the breadth of the ship There are generally two or three of them according to the number of holds in the ship; into these the cable is carefully coiled down, the inboard end coming into the testing room where continual sign ds are kept up with the shore all the time the cable is running out.

The tanks for the were far too bulky be hoisted in complete they bad to be taken to pieces and built up again inside the ship's hold when it was ascer- tained that the various parts fitted together cor. rectly. The cable, after it leaves the lank, passes through a system of rollers, which form fast which would otherwise be likely to do in a kind of brake to prevent it running out too, deep water or during a heavy sea.
Moreover, the cable must not be checked too suddenly or it would inevitably snap in two this brake must Three Danish vessels and one British will therefore be tended with the greatest care by soon leave luule with a view to assisting in thoroughly experienced men.
