NOTICE TO SHAREHOLDERS.

The Lalongs, or Sea Gypsies, are a peculiarly THE THIRTY-SIXTH ORDINARY

interesting set of wanderers-veritable vagrants or harmless vagabonds who fit about from island to island tying scattered in the Mergui Archipelago. They live in families under a primitive system of patriarchal rule and, en- oying the most unbounded freedom, cultivate a rude and haughty independence that is resent- ful of all restraint outside that of the head of the clan. They are a healthy, robust race of about the middle beight, dark brown in colour, and develop more or less pronounced types of features, with high cheek bones, small oblique eyes, overhanging brows, large ears and mouths, etc., characteristic of the lado-Mala- yan race. The men wear their hair in tufts at the back of the head, while the shott, straight, or frizzled brown locks that adorn the heads of the women are frequently loose or matted to. gether. They affect no ornaments, except

sometimes armlets of iron or brass,

Their clothing is scanty. It usually con- sists of a short strip of coarse cloth tied round the loins and sucked up at the back after being passed between the nether limbs in the familiar Indian ashion.

The Chairman-I shall have pleasure in proposing the resolutions as read, but before doing so, I think it desirable to make one or two remarks, so that you may, understand the present position of the Company. When we last met there were a number of liabilities hanging over our heads and requiring immedi- ale payment: Those liabilities are still hang ing over us, of course, but we have arranged with our creditors to wait until this meeting has passed the resolutions now before it, and until the Company is reconstructed. Our creditors have, without exception; been most considerate and all are willing to wait till fands are available to meet their claims. Then we have transferred our account, the No. 2

Bank, (Hear, heat, and applause.) I am account, to the llangkong and Shanghai hoping that, if this meeting passes the resolu- tions before it, we shall be able to carry on till the monies from the first call on the recon structed Company are available. In reference to our employees, as you are aware, the Com- pany had entered into agreements with them covering three years. The Ditectors have seen each one and found them perfectly willing to accept the suggestions made to them, and they have left us in the most friendly spirit. We have paid them each one month in ad vance on their agreements, and the understand- ing is that we shall pay them each two months HUGHES & HOUGH,

Throughout the day, in fair weather, angling, netting or even harpooning the fish, that are often visible in the pellucid depths of the sea, are the men's engrossing occupations; but when darkness descends they put back to land, on which they invariably spend the night, During the rains, or when, from other causes, the sea is too rough for fishing, they dive for oysters in shallows near the beach, or hunt for shell Ash or sea fowl on the unfrequented shores of the islands. The mine is now probably being again operated. We have sent up Mr. Verohoyle in charge of the mine and we are impressed with this gentleman's ability.
