which was subscribed for by the fair sex of the Colony and competed for by some of the very best ponies representing all the leading stables, like Buxey's, John Peel's, and Wingard's with the conspicuous absence of a mount from the stalls owned by Polts. It was unfortunate that just as a start was about to be made a sharp shower of rain burst from the clouds which had been creep ing up during the morning and drove every- body to shelter. The downpour was not of Jong duration, and the spectators, forced to rush to the booths and stands, were soon out again in the open and at their respective coigns of vantages. The race quickly | Mr. G. G. Moxon's Nomination, rost 12lb... commenced, and after one false start the field got away on very even terms. Algerine drew out of the bunch at an early stage and was quickly followed by Zodiac and Alarmu. At the treacherous Rock Gresson overhauled Moller and took John Peel's 'spotted' to the winning post after a fine struggle for premier position which Hayes sought on Rare Rose. Along the straight the pace was tremendous, and when at length the final cheer arose from spectators at the post Zodiac was but a length ahead of Buxey's comp, titor. At the conclusion of the race, Mr. Gresson, the winning jockey, was fortunate in being awarded the purse at the hands of Miss Noel, daughter of Admiral Sir Gerard Noel, who made the presentation. Salem increases his lead the back stretch to fully twenty lengths. At Bowrington, Patrimony was second and Border Raider third, Mr. Putts's bringing up the rest. Climbing the hill, Polka responding to Cresson's call rushed into third position, Salem mean while showing signs of fagging. Hayes then spurted and rode a fine race challenging Polka for second place. Entering the straight Polka dropped out and Coronet Rose coming on in his fine, old form secured a very good second, missing the first place by hall a length. The same distance separated him from Scottish King who was third.
The three-quarter canter for the Phaeton Stakes brought out a field of ten and early in the race it was seen that the chances rested between The Spirtle, Grafton and Royal. Cegg evidently knew his mount and held him in to a nicety allowing Spirtle to show the way up to the entrance to the straight when he gave Grafton his head per- mitting him to go at his own pace and won easily. The Spirtle then bad to contend against Royal which was creeping up behind and sticking at the heels of Wingard's pony. The finish was exciting and ended in a win on the post for Royal.
