The idea is, of course, not a new one, but the agency scheme reduces it to a sort of fine art humorous aspects. One is tempted to wonder, that has various pleasing, and to some extent indeed, why in the world any man or woman with any ambition at "all ito' shine as a social star in the firmament of fashion and who can succeed in borrowing a five or a ten-pound note to meet "preliminary face," need any longer remain a member of what some Americans call "the crowd of no-accounts." For the shart eat to "distinction" is now so simple, so direct. Suppose, for example, that I crave social distinction. What have I 10 do to obtain? In the first place I have to write out my cheque for five guineas—that THE DIVIDEND declared for the half, if I decide that I am going to be en- year ending 31st December, 1904, at the tisfied with only five guineas' worth of no- rate of One Pound and Ten Shillings together tariety-then I have to write, whether the with a Bonus of One Pound Sterling per Share spirit moves me or not, as much "stuff" of $125, is payable on and after MONDAY, the 20th day of February current, at the Offices of the Corporation where Shareholders are quested to apply for Warrants.

about myself my name will "in a very few SINGER SEWING MACHINES

months be in everybody's mouth who moves in the highest social circles" Strange as it will scem to this scribe, 1 am not quite sure that 1 should like that. To be in "everybody's mouth," even though the mouths move in the |"bigbest circles,” is not, to my mind, neces- sarily an unmixed joy. "If you want social distinction," observes another of my kindly correspondents, "we can give you that quite easily... the fee, payable in advance, will be 33. Think of it--none of your counterfeit, suburban, clap-trap, trumped-up stuff, but real, blue-blooded, pukka, "social distinction" for a whole year, and all for three guineas. One feels inclined to exclaim, How on earth can do it at the price?" Surely someone must be "sweat- ed." But, in any case, a glorious prospect un- folds itself now before those of us who for years have striven hard, but in vain, to reach, by hook or by crook, either the apex of the pin- nacle of fame, or the topmest rung of the long limbed social ladder-or both.

"Like every other business," writes a third agency, "Press-work has to be understood," That seems probable, at any rate, and there. fore, the assertion is quite sensible.
