The Hamburg-American Line has been able sucessfully to effect the lapse of this agreement, which would have deprived it of a considerable portion of it profits for this year. This, however, has not been the case with the North-German Lloyd Company. It may accor. cantile Marine Company will come to the aid of the Bremen company with a subridy of at least 3 per cent on 25,000,000. marks (£1,850,000) of the share capital. Last year no obligation was entailed either upon the In- ternational Mercantile Marine Company or upon the German steamship lines under the above mentioned clauses of the agreement, since, in view of the 6 per cent. divident paid by the North German Lloyd Company, as by the Hamburg-American Line, the account with the International Company was made to balance.
The total profits of the North-German Linyd last year amounted to 26 511,127 marks 1,325,556) and the net profits to 6,459 048 marks (£322 952). The North-German Lloyd Company has recently placed orders with German shipbuilding firms for six steamers of from 5,000 to 8,cortons burden. The German Australian Steamship Company has also order- ed shree steamers, two of which are being constructed in Germany, while the third is being built by the firm of Messrs, Swan Hunter, and Co., in the Tyne. The negotiations which were instituted by
firm of Messrs. Freitas in Hamburg with a view to acquiring by purchase 1,010,000 gul- dens' (CB4,256) worth of shares in the Holland- American Line have proved fruitless, and have consequently been broken off. A sturdy op position manifested itself in Holland against tha proposed intrusion of German shipping companies in Dutch skipping interests. The principle of nationality played an important part in the failure of these negotiations, so that the German companies were finally compelled to withdraw their offer.
