THE girl, Ah Mui, nged thirteent years, who jumped over the verandah of a house in Yau- mali where she was being demained against her will, by a man and woman who had brought her from the New Territory, for unlawful pur pos, died in the Government Civil Hospital on Monday night.

OWING to the wide circulation of news con cerning Chinese labour for South Africa in Peking the Wai Wo Pu has notified the British Minister there to take steps for its suppression. His reply expressed deep regret for what had happened, and promised to take steps to the desired effect in future, and hoped that the people might not be deceived by mare. Tumpur's. The Wai Mu Pu will shortly Instruct the authorities of Shuntianfu to issue proclamations for general information.- Eastern Times.
A CHINESE shopkeeper at West Point was rebuked by a lukong on Tuesday for behaving in a very disorderly manner with a number of girls in the public street. The Chinaman grow wrath at this interference with his freedom of Action, and became more disorderly, threaten. ing the lukong with severe punishment "under the English law for such interference. Mr.
Hazeland this morning administered the severe punishment, but it was to the disorderly shop- keeper, and consisted of a fan of $10, ar 14 days. The fine was paid.
THE fire season is keeping up its record. Two on Wednesday night, and one Thursday night! The latter broke out at about six o'clock, in the shop of Hui Ling, No. 257 Des Voeux Road, Central. There were a number of tins of paint and oil on the premises, which are being re- decorated prior to their opening as a Chinese boarding house. It is understood that some of this fell on the firewood which was set fire to by sparks from the kitchen, communicating itself to the stairs, The Fire Brigade turned out under Mr. H. G. Baker, but they had little to do, the conflagration being got under before the damage amounted to more than $100. The place is not insured!
ON Tuesday Mangal Sam and Hazoora Singh, Indians on their way to Manila, to seek work, and at present living at the Sikh temple, Wan. chai, went to a bath house in Bullock Street and there met another Indian. It was arrang. ed that two should bathe and the third watch the clothes together with a sum of $470 belong- to Mungal Sam. Hazoora Singh was chosen watchman. It was alleged at the police court yesterday that while his co-religionists were bathing, he transferred the $470 to his own pocket, and decamped. The matter was re ported to the police, and shortly after Hazoora Singh was arrested at the Happy Valley by an Indian police sergeant. No money was found on him. Prisoner, who denied having seen the notes, was remanded for further inquiries.
MRS. S. W. Webb, of Killadoon, Wanchai, on Tuesday prosecuted her house-boy for refusing orders, and leaving her service with- out giving a month's notice. The accused
stated that he wrote in the "servant's book" "a
month's notice." Prosecutrix said he had no
right to write anything is that book, and the
did not take that as a notice, Mr. Hazeland said that if he did write that in the "servant's book" it was a month's notice. Prosecutrix had not the book, which was only for the servants to sign receipt of their wages in, in Court, and His Worship set back the case till 2.15 p.m. for its production.-Upon resuming this afternoon the book was produced, and something was written against the defendants' name in Chinese which the Court translator interpreted as "I give a month's notice." Prosecutrix said
when the boy wrote in the book she asked him
what he had written, and he said "that is my name." He said nothing about leaving, and as prosecutrix could not read Chinese she thought it was his signature for his wages. The boy was fined $5.
