[From Our Own Correspondents.]

Canton, 12th January,

1.16 p.m. A very serious riot has broken out among natives in the city, and is

still unsubdued.

The police station has been demo- lished; all business is suspended, and the banks are closed.

[On the arrival of the Canton steamer Has koro, at half past three this afternoon, we were informed by officers, and prominent passengers also, that the City was apparently all quiet when the steamer left at half-past eight this morning. They had heard nothing of the rioting.ED, AT]

- In his letter, received later in the day, our correspondent saya, the disturbance has been caused by dispute between the newly organized police force and a thee shop, be cause at the request of ad influential landlord the latter arrested a member of one of the trade who was a menth in artear with his rent. It is

They want to know if the city is to suffer such a condition of things any longer, it life is to be made a burden because somebody elle refuses to do his duty. Still it goes on, the grumble-the inalienable right of every British subject--and the anathenia against those who pretend to rule the unruly. The cry That there must be something wrong in the State of Denmarke if it cannot guard against what may be called temporary aberrations continues.

All large cities, at the present time, have electric light in the streets and in the principal shops and houses; naturally Hongkong has not been behind hand. In 1891 the Hongkong Electric Company was formed, and in a short time after that the streets were flooded with the rays of the arc lamp. In a back street, hidden behind the houses of Queen's Road East, stands the Hongkong Electric Com. said that it was the intention of the land-pany's premises, and since the inauguration of lord to get the premises closed and re-open them as a gambling-house. All the mer chants; of the ward protested, and in a body went and demanded the release of the prisoner. The official, refused to accede to the request with the result that a free fight ensued between the merchants and the police. Several people were wounded, and the whole

ward is now in a state of panic. Every shop is closed, no business whatever being transacted. even the fruit stands are vacated. "It is under- stood that, if the matter is not settled within a day or so, the 17th Ward will join issue in the protest with the 18th Ward.

the light in Hongkong there has been a won- derfal advancement in the use of electricity. It has been said with truth that crime hides her hooded head when light appears, and although statistics are out of the question here, there is no doubt that the garish illumination of the electric lamp has been a better police man than even those able-bodied representa tives of law and order who parade the city streets.

AT THE WORKS.

With some such feelings as those, a repre sentative of the Hongkong Telegraph sought an interview with the manager of the Hongkong Electric Co.'s works, and stated that he tesired the privilege of what in every-day parlance is known as a "look-round," or to be as Oriental as the Oriental himself, a “look-see." One of the gentlemen connected with the establish ment made the curious remark-"Well, that's funny. I never heard of anybody wanting to' see the works before. What do you expect to see?" There was a poser.

LOCAL BANKRUPICIES.

At the Supreme Court this morning, before the Chief Justice (Sir Henry S. Berkeley), Mr P. W. Goldting made an application, on an ordinary resolution of creditors, that a receiving order be granted in the case of the Lai Wah firm, now baskrupt..

The application was granted, there being no opposition, and the Official Receiver (M. Brace Shepherd) was appointed trustee.

Ma Pak Chuen, an elderly tender of Pottinger Street, petitioned that a receiving order he made against the Yang Hing Bank.

Mr. Dixon, who supported the application, proved that the Bank was indebted to his client in the sum of $3,000 due on two promis. ssary hotes.

A HOW THE WASTE JB CHECKED. --

Probably some readers have seen the switch- boards at whichtheoperators work in home elec- trical factories. As a rule in the cities of Britain, the electrical factories supply power for both lighting and tramways, with the result that the board is a much more complicated arrangement there than it is in Hongkong. But that does not mean to say that the board here it simple. It is covered with letters, showing which machine is working and the district lighting, Meters are placed on the boards show- ing the amount of electricity being supplied, and with the help of the readings on the meters supplied to customers, the amount of electricity lost in transit is checked. The meter readers bring in their reports; these are compared with the reading of the meters in the power-house and the discrepancy shows what has gone to the winds.

Much of the work, therefore, of keeping the fires in order is done automatically, and only a few human stokers, who seemed to be having an easy time on the whole, were at work on the occasion of this visit.
