Kowloon as a residental locality for the jad ed workers of Hongkong has been developing at a phenomenal rate during the past few years, the prosperity which has attended that develop.io "itongkong Stocks in 1951,” and there is abundant evidence to show that ment is creasing. Those who can look back ten years and reinumber Kowloon as it then was will best realize the enormous improve mei is which have been eflected there. The face of the earth, so to speak, has been changed, and what was practically a barren peninsula, with a few houses scattered here and there, and those mostly of the rudest description, have given place to modern dwellings where every combat is p'ovided and all the latest "notions" me installed. Indeed, it might be a suburb of London so far as outward appearance goes, though a visit to the tour, where Chinese ser- vants are everywhere in evidence, quickly dis- pels that illusion.

Of course, there are exceptions, no doubt, when the increase of capital has resulted in a terrible disaster to the shareholders.

report. The singular and significant fact about the episode is that such a number of large sleamen should be north-bound on this parti- cular track during the North-East monsoon, when it is well known to shipmasters that the strongest southerly currents prevail along that coast at this time of the year sonic times to the extent of 30 miles a day to the south. The regular passage from Singapore during this monsoon is away out to seaward about 150 miles east of Cape Paderan. The only other Eastern port this fleet of steamers might have sailed from would be Saigon; but an exodus of five large freighters from Saigon, on one day, would be an exceptional event in the history of that part after the rice export season had closed. It is possible that they may be colliers having a rendezvous with the Baltic Flect in one of the numerous little harbours that abound on the coast of Annam.-Straits Times.
