FREIGHT.
In their report of 17th inst., Messrs. Lamke and Rogge state:---
During the period that has elapsed since issue of last report, only an insignificant amount of business has come to pass, but it cannot be said that the market has ruled any weaker than heretofore ;, on-the-contrary, a strong demand bas been in appearance throughout the fort- night and it is solely attributable to the
scarcity of suitable tonnage and the often experienced difficulty to make both ends meet, that the numerous inquiries, especially emanat ing from the North, could not be filled locally. Prospects, on the whole, remain decidedly good. As regards Southern business, Saigon has -recently been inquiring_after_tonnage again -steamers of medium size only to load for this port at 15 cents per picul, bat it goes without saying, that only boats trading regular ly between that port and ours will accept such business. There is not very much lest now of the old crops.produce, and the still available: remnants are being held at high prices. As to the arrival of new grain and total estimate of the crop, we shall probably be able to say something definite in next issue,
Saigon/Philippines, there has been some inquiry resulting in a charter at 30 cents per picul and, in addition, some of the Manila- owned boats are said to have been taken up elsewhere.
In other directions, Java or Japan there has been no inquiry,
possible to give a reliable quotation at the
called the "Hongkong Regatta," on the 11th of February next. The programme, so far de- vised, will include three four-bar races, one of which will be for a cup presented by the Go- vernor, Sir Matthew Nathan, K.C.M.G.; the crews in these races to be professional, that is, all the members of each individual crew must be of the same profession. One of the four- cared races, will be an open race, and it is hoped that entries may be notified from other
*~*~*~ From Java to this, no fresh business has Far Eastern ports. As at present proposed, there transpired chiefly for want of suitable tonnage, will be also two pair-par races, one being open to outports, and one confined to Hong-tinually been taking the berth, but rates have To load here for Japan, steamers have con- kong contestants. Two races for men-of-war slackened considerably of late and it is hardly boats will be included in the programme. It was His Excellency the Governor who initiated this scheme for, as it were, an Interport and local rogatta. He has himself settled and arranged the rules and conditions under which, what is expected to be the most important, and [1352❘ the most interesting ́event of the day's rowing -the "Professional" race-which is open only to local professionals, is to be rowed. The lo terest His Excellency is displaying should give & great stimulus to this form of sport in the Colony. A proposal is now under discussion to change the course for these races to the Hongkong side, as it is thought that this will be a most popular move, seeing that most of those interested live over here.

From Yangiste ports to Canton, a good demand continues to prevail and rates are about the same au last quoted.
Coal freight have ruled very firm and a number of charters have bean drawn at $230 per ton, Mofi or Kuchlaotsu to this and further tonnage can probably be placed. For Singa pore, only about $2.40 pas ton is offering 1 no business reported.
On monthly terms, a fairly large business is said to have been done at fuil rates in the North, whilst local Chinese have been keeping ∙aloof in the hope of doing better by waiting,
