It is difficult nowadays to "realise that the pigtail was once considered, not only a neces- sary part of man's adornment, but also a bo coming, and graceful appendage. From an artistic point of view, there is little to be said in its favour, especially when it is compared with the lovelocks of the Cavallers or the full- bottomed wigs of a later period. Lord Lytton, | Halws in "Pelham," put the case very forcibly when be asks whether we should be as apt as we are gow to compassionate the misfortunes

The custom of wearing the pigtail may be comparatively modera in Europe, but its origin goes back to the dawn of history. Pigtailed Hittites were among the opponents of Ramess II., and from India comes a legendary account of the reason for the grotesque fashion which Darwin might have approved. The Rajas, we are told, of a certain city on the Gujerat coast are styled Longtailed, bossing their descent from the King of the Monkeys, who helped Rama Chundrá to conquer India. This lends an air of respectable antiquity to a fashion which has little else to recommend it. After all, It must be recollected that some fashions are seither venerable por elegant. Besides, the wearing of a pigtail did not render a man ridiculous or contemptible. The eighteenth century may have been prosaic, but in it lived hard thinkers, hard livers, and hard-fighters, who laid broad the foundations of Empire of their successors.➡űleks,
