to call for comment,
The writer of those notes cannot have watch

In the first day's play, on a fiery bumpy wicket, Shanghai made 229, and then dismissed lour of Hongkong's best batsmen for 94. Again, on the last morning of the match, the long kong wickets were falling fast, and it looked at
one time as if the small total of 107 rons, which were wanted to win the match, would not be reached. R. Hancock, the Hongkong captain, one of the most fearless hitters, was forced to

to conversation and music, the gathering, though quite informal, proving pleasant to a degree.

FREIGHT.
Messrs. Wheelock & Co. write in their report of 8th inst, as follows:-Since last writing a lull has set in our lomeward Freight Market and cargo offering to Europe has slightly fallen off, which was only to be expected considering that
the Northern Ports are now closed for the winter and only very little cargo coming down from the River Ports.
Coastwise--Rates are being well maintained all round contrary to all expectations, and lon- nage is very scarce, although trade with the North has ceased, there is a slight demand for steamers on a "time" basis and numerous

The Hongkong Muru was used as a trans- port and report states that she sunk with all - hands on board.
Whether the story is true or false, the Toyo Kisen Kaisba Co. evidently has little hope of recovering the Honghong or the Nippon Maru for, some years to come, if at all. Hence the building of the two monster ships.
While the ships of the Japanese company have been off the line, the Pacific, Manila and Occidental and Oriental lines have been duing a flourishing business, but with the return of affairs to normal conditions the companies have little hope of successful competition with the Japanese.
D. News.
The following correspondence ensued in subsequent issues-
Sir, In reply to the leading article in to- day's paper, I would venture to suggest that the writes had not grasped the situation pro- perly. It is surely quite conceivable that a short time may be required to raise a large sum of money, as even in London, millions are not left idle. Also the writer seemed to think that the profits would remain stationary, where as the intention is to largely augment the earning powers of the Company, which with more capital is quite possible, and this would benefit, not only the shareholders, but Shanghai generally.
Just before the war Japanese shipbuilding bad been given a great impetus, and the Mikado's flag was flying over the commerce of the Far East.
