He was born in 51 A. TIN MINING PROSPECTS.

There is abundant evidence to show that alluvial tin-mining has been carried on in these parts for many bundreds of years by the Chin ese, who have worked out all the alluvial tin that was procurable by the primitive dredging appliances adopted by them. The same may be said of many other parts of the Malay Peninsula, from which nearly all the easily won alluvial tia has disappeared. Nevertheless, there is undoubtedly a great future for tin. mining in the Peninsula with up-to-date ma- chinery, as the lodes and deep alluvial have hardly as yet been touched.

Another anomaly, most injurious to British trade in these waters, is that the Dutch, while permitted free access to Singapore and other British ports, rigorously exclude any British ships from calling at their ports. Singapore is open to all comers, and the Germans have reason to be thankful that such is the case. In the ineanwhile, is it not nearly time that some of our stay-at-home statesmen began to think about donning their "thinking imperially Caps Singapore is by no means a solitary in- stance of a splendid British port being exploited and undermined by German competition.-
