higher grades show a decided upward tendency, Having the above in view caused me to cable on the 14th April last that "prospects for East- era markets good." Our New South Wales merchants can rely that i will closely watch their interests in this respect, and at once cable when there is likely to be a surplus or shortage.
COMPRESSED FODDER.
I cannot make out what our New South Wales people are doing not to make special efforts to obtain a footing. When I arrived in the East compressed fodder was practically unknown. The other States and also America
bave scored at the expense of our introduction. Doubtless many will dispute this fact, still the evidence in my possession is ample. There is one important matter to bear in mind in con- nection with the Eastern trade, viz, when ange trade flows in a certain direction It is very
difficult to divert it.
TANNING EXTRACTS. Very large quantities of bark are imported to the East, including Japan and Chins, and there is no reason why our New South Wales acacias should not be turned to profitable advantage, as well as many other minor vegetable pro dacts,

Each suite sbounds in rare art ornamenis. Öca of the beds cost £2,000. Each room has a device for regulating the temperature and a magnetic clock. The fittings of the bathrooms are of solid silver. The hotel has a library of 2,130 volumes in charge of a professional TO BE OBTAINED FROM— librarian. The charges correspond with the luxurious appointments. The royal suite, which leads the way in magnificence, cosis £25 a day. Millionaires can occupy it and live luxuriantly on £20,000 a year. The public dining-rooms accommodate only 500 persons, but fully ten thousand applications were made
for seats at the first dinner.

New South Wales butter is highly spoken of, but the get-up is very indifferent. Even if the quality be good unless the package is attractive a brand will And considerable difficulty in THE getting a footing on the Eastern markets.
GENERAL COMPLAINTS.
It has been frequently brought under my the notice by merchants of the East that natining?' tory arrangements are not always carried out at Sydney and, As an illustration, quotations are asked for, but the replies do not give the desired information, and do pot admit of busi. ness being done. Cif quotations are asked for, but fo.b. quotations are received.
There is also a lack of information as to the cubic space occupied per ton of goods asked for. This is a very important matter, for the nativo bayers invariably want to daye every possible detail, and orders have been lost
