THE VENTAI COLLIERY.
Describing the Yentai Colliery near Mukden which has fallen into the hands of the Japanese, the correspondent of the Mainichi, who has | visited the colliery, writes that it is situated about six miles cast of the town of Yental, along the: Chinese Easter Railway. A vast plain lies west of the colliery, and this is bounded on the cast by a range of high hills. The colliery is situated in the noted coalfields of Manchuria, which produce a very large amount of coal annually, though the quality is Got good. The mineral found in Yental cof- liery, however, is smokeless and of a good quality.

VULGAPITY AND VITALITY.
In a very interesting article, a writer in the Saturday Review points out that a certain sort of vulgarity is essential to most forms of suc, cess in the materialistic, money making life of to-day-
"It is rather an unpleasant conclusion, if it is true, that what we gain in energy we lose in manners; but it really does seems as though if we admire and cultivate one ideal there must be a sacrifice in some degree of the other
to the struggle for life we want energy.
What is indubitably useful in any career is that kind of energy and vitality which moni fests itself in making the most of whatever natural qualities one may be endowed with, "imposing them, in displaying them dramatic cally or theatrically, in the skilful suggestion that they are greater than they really are, in keeping them constantly before It is desired to conquer,"
