seamy side of war:-

Godowns was followed by a large blaze on the Honam side to the east of the city. Over 100 houses were burned. On Saturday sight last a the broke out in i hirteenth Street, the Thir een Hungs, and many houses were burned The fire raged fiercely for some hours.

Another correspondent writes that a fire broke out on the 8th at 8 p.m. at the rear of the Cus tom House, and burned for three hours before it could be got under control. The famous eating-house, known as the Hang Fang, and the well-known bakery, Kau Yu, were destroyed together with many smaller shops. Fortunately, the eating-house and bakery were covered by insurance. It is believed that the outbreak originated in a tin-shop by the over-heating of a soldering iron which put a quantity of resin on fire, and during the excitement which ensued some kerosene was upset and burst into flames, The total damage is at present unknown.

A NEW COLLEGE.

Fearless and Brumble, and the Lion and Dễ French sailors belonging respectively to the cidd, whenever they met on shore, but nothing of any serious nature was apprehended, or the commanders would certainly have taken care that their respective crews should not be ashore at the same time. About 30 p.m. yesterday four blue-jackets of the Bramble were quietly en- joying themselves in the bar-room of the Colon- ial Hotel in the French Concession, when some 15 French sailors rushed in and attacked them. Chairs were broken op and used as weapons, and presently the whole excited crowd swarin- ed into the road and continued the fight, knives were drawn by the French sailors and two ol the British sailors were rather badly cut. Re- inforcements arrived in the shape of five lusty residents, and this caused the French sailors to beat a basty retreat to another hotel a few hundred yards away. The residents succeeded without much difficulty in pacifying the blue- jackets.

Capt. Boismagon captained the team. Sergle .M.S. Iphigenia supplied the scorers. Capt. Major Rundle was in charge of the Range, and

THE SMUGGLING OF RIFLES.

The Waiwapu seemingly knows nothing about the shipment of anns and ammunition into Canton by German firms. It may be true that the such firms are not guilty, or not the only guilty ones. This is not so important as is the fact that arms and ammunition are being sent into Kiangtung and Kwangsi by the ship load. Perhaps not a week passes without hun- dreds, yes, thousands, of miles pass up the river: Where they go to only those in the secret know. But that the rides pass OD is known to a good many people.
