KING OF MELODRAMA.

DEATH OF MR. WILSON BARRETT.

"A boy might forget his first sermon, but over his first play," once said the late Mr. Wilson Barrett to a party of Scottish clergy. The opinion may have in it the appearance of conceit, but Mr. Barrett's belief in the mission- ary work of the stage was born early, and remained with him to his death. "A play, however clever," he used to, say, which is purely farcical or of low moral tone, or merely morbid, is never of any permanent value."

He wished to be considered a moral force as

well as a player of parts, and there can be little doubt that whatever diverse opinions there may have been on the subject, he did more than any one else to bring about a harmony. between Church and stage. His plays were

"It's him the laughter of the irreverent or the a fire on the lee beam ca-pi-tan," then growled criticism of the cultured. a voice froin the inky blackness in the bows.

Sure enough that bright glare to leeward, no more than the size of a man's hand to the naked eye, became, when once the night glass had fairly focussed, a full rigged ship on fire fore and aft,

"You no can catchee that pieces ship till alle man have makee celo (died)," muttered the weather-beaten old pilot solemnly. My men displayed none of their usual alertness in this work of rescue; and I rated them sharply for believing in the stupid Chinese superstition that men you save from drowning are bound to injure you afterwards."

Meanwhile, the ex-pirate war slipping through the water before a nine-knat breeze, her fins lines causing her to glide through the dark phosphorescent seas in a seeming track of palest blue flame as she rapidly ran down towards the burning ship. This was apparent ly a large sailing vessel of some 1,500 tons now a veritable fiery furnace. Despite the red glare of the fames, not a sign, of a boat or a raft was to be anywhere seent Nothing but a spar or two and some deck lumber firating well clear of the ship.

THE POWDER MAGAZINE.

On one occasion, speaking to some members of the Fress, he said in his honest way, #1 don't want..mercy; I don't ask it. I want justice."

"Mr. Barrelt," returned a well-known critic who was present, "you shall have more than justice; you shall have mercy,”

The remark, was not unkindly meant, but the actor-manager, who was singularly sensi» tive regarding his professional work, wat evidently.hurt..

He was generous in the chances he gave to young people; and many a player of to-day hus formed his style" on Wilson Barrett. There were actors in his company who had been twenty years wh their chief.
