A NEW CODE.
We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will
be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters

A cone point upwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the North West of the Colony.
Red Signals indicate that the centre is believed to he more than 300 miles away from
the Colony.
Black Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be less than 300 miles away from
the Colony.
The above signals will as heretofore, be hoisted only when-typlinnas exist in such poti. tions or are moving in such directions that in. formation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav❘ ing the harbour.
NIGHT SIGNALS.
Two lanterns hoisted vertical's indicate bad
weather in the Colony and that the wind is expected to veer.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also. by day only, at the Harbour Office and on t M's Receiving Ship.
LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.
The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gale of wind is expected to blow here.

THE CHINA CO1ST METEOROLOGICAL
REGISTER is exhibited at the same places daily about goon. It contains observations made at Hongkong and at a number of stations in the Far East, together with Remarks, Weather | forecasts, and information regarding the exist ence and movements of typhoons based thereon..
SPECIAL INQUIRIES,
Masters of vessels or their agents may, whenever necessary, call at the Telegraph Company's Office in Connaught Road and send telegrams to the Observatory asking for special information without charge. Such inquiries may also be sent from the Police Station at Kowloon Point which is connected with the Observatory by telephone.
