London, 5th July. The correspondent of the Standard a Thenisin says that, since the 27th inst when the Russian guardship off Port Arthur was sunk, the japanese main squadron has been landling men at Dabiy preparatory to a final attack on Port Arthur.

The japanese will probably bring things there to a final issue within the next few days.

Siberian Railway, The Pest to St. Petersburg has arived from Mukden in seventeen days' time.

The railway is said to be working splendidly. The Transbaikal section of the line is carry- ing on the average eight trains daily.

The Uganda Trouble.

The Stam Free Press of the 30th wit, says: Dr. Marques, whose arrival in Bangkok we announced recently, and to whose brilliant career and valuable services both in Hongkong and to the Portuguese Government at Macao, that gained such marks of esteem and merit, was the recipient yesterday afternoon of an address and presentation of silver plate from Macao-born residents in Bangkok in recogni tion of his kindness to his countrymen, We understand that the genial and kind hearted Doctor leaves Bangkok to-morrow, and all those who had the happiness of his acquaint ance will heartily wish him bon voyage, and a pleasant time.

HOW THE JAPANESE ESTABLISH- ED THEIR FINANCIAL SYSTEM.

In a recent report Mr. Hlenty Clews, the well-known New York banker, devotes most

of his space to an appreciation of the Japanese, as the financial situation gives him very little to write about. The following extract is parti. cularly interesting :-

DIMENSIONS OF THE SHIP.

As we have already pointed out, the new vessel is the largest craft yet launched at Hongkong, the next in size being the s.5. Kinshun

of 2,860 tons, which the Hongkong and Wham-

poa Dock Co. built to the order of the Hong- kong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Co. The Shanghat is a steel, twin-screw steamer, 310 feet long between perpendiculars, 46 feet broad, and 14 ft. 3 in. in depth, with a deadweight capacity of 1,900 tons on a draft of 11 ft. 9 in. she is to be fitted with two sets of triple expansion surface condensing engines, the diameter of the cylinders of which are 14 in.. 24 in. and 39 in., respectively. The length of stroke is 30 in. Hier boilers, two in number, are single ended and of mild steel. Their mean diameter is 15 ft. and the length 11 ft. 6 in., with a working pressure of 190 lbs. per square inch. The speed of the ship is reckoned at 11 knois per hour when fully laden. the vessel has excellent accommodation aboard is most strongly built and lighted by electricity throughout.
