KING EDWARD'S VISIT 70 KIEL

The recent visit of King Edward to Kiel Awakens great interest in the whole world but especially in Germany. This interest has its origin with the Germans in no way in political considerations or curiosity, but in real sympathy with the guest of the Ger- man Kaiser. It is certainly an indisputable fact that the sympathies of the Germans for the English King have been continually on the increase. That the King, as Prince of Wales, was rather unpopular in Germany. cannot be denied. From his apparent inaction con clusions as to his capabilities and character were drawn which were not at all flattering, but not enough attention was paid to the fact that an heir to the Throne is in general limited to passivity and that this is especially, the 'case' in Englan i where political responsibilities and activities are so strictly regulated. As soon as he came to the Throne however King Edward showed that he was no puppet. He took part in an active, skilful, and most happily suc cessful manner in the foreign politics of his country. This is the more willingly conceded in Germany as the political activity of the English King makes for peace and conciliation. Although there is general sfaction prevail-

Daman denied a promise to marry, and said THERAPION NO.2, that the lady suggested a form of marriage which would not be binding.

Lord Kincairney found that in respect of the written declaration the parties were lawfully married by mutual declaration. Duran's case, his lordship said, seemed to be rested on the idea that a man was not bound to keep his word in such a case, unless a marriage had the sang- tion of a magistrate, or of a minister, but that

was not to.
