HONGKONG METEOROLOGICAL

SIGNALS.

A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong

Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which cames into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at prosent in use at Shanghai, and wilį be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces- sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signale are as follows-

Á cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and drum below in dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the Colony,

A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony.

A cone point downwards and drum below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the Colony.

ing the harbour.

NIGHT SIGNALS.

Two lanterns hoisted vertically indicate bar weather in the Colony and that the wind is expected to veer.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Harbour Office and on 't M's Receiving Ship..

LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gale of wind is expected to blow here.
