THE TIMESTELEGRAPH STEAMER

Yesterday evening the Douglas steamer, Animun, which was chattered by The Timer newspaper for use by their correspondents in Northem waters during the ppening stages of | the war, returned to the Colony after a most interesting cruise and exciting experiences with warships of the belligerent powers. These have been fully recorded in our columns from time to time. Her return is doubtless due to the fact that the Japanese Government refused permission for the ship to be taken within the war zone with wireless telegraphic apparatus aboard. The Haimun left Kobe on the 19th.

Active work was begun in February of 1903, and careful examinations were made of the possible source of supply. The wisdom of the selection of Don Gehava Palacio was evident, and extended surveys were" thereupon "under-" taken of the entire watershed of the Mariquina river.

The two principal objections to the present i system are: first, the fact that the source of supply is contaminated to a greater or less degree by approximately 25,000 inhabitants of several towns which lie on the banks of the stream above the present intake; and, second, the expense of the pumpage of the water

On examination of the Marquina riyer water- shed it was found, however, that at a point in the mountains above the centers of population, a sufficient supply could be obtained, which stored and diverted by means of a masonry dam, would not only insure good and whole
