HONGKONG METEC ROLOGICAL SIGNALS.

A NEW CODE.

We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will

be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball at Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are as follows:-

A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony.

A cone point upwards and drum below in dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the Colony.

A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony,

A cone point downwards and drum below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the

Colony,

Two lanterns hoisted horizontally indicate bad weather in the Colony and 'hat the wind is Main, Ger. transport, for Kiautschow, expected to back.

The signals are repeated on the flagstaff of the Godown Company at Kowloon, and also, by day only, at the Harbour Office and on H M's Receiving Ship.

LOCAL STORM-WARNINGS.

The Colony itself is warned of approaching typhoons by means of the Typhoon Gun placed at the food of the mast, which is fired whenever a strong gale of wind is expected to blow here.

SPECIAL INQUIRIES.

Masters of vessels or their agente may, whenever necessary, call at the Telegraph Company's Office in Connaught Read and send telegrams to the Observatory asking for special information without charge. Such inquiries may also be sent from the Police Station at Kowloon Point which is connected with the Observatory by telephone.

On the 13th at 11.30 a.m. The barometer has risen slightly on the Coast of China and over the Eastern Sea, and fallen in the North of Japan. In 5. China and the Philippines it is stationary.

Gradients are moderate on the China Coast and moderate E. to S.E. winds will prevail in the Formosa Channel.

A well marked depression exists in the China Sea, southward of Hongkong and strong E. winds will be experienced in the north part and moderate SW. winds in the South part of that
