There remains to be considered another feature, which, though not absent from the more distant portions of the property, is con- spicuously developed over a wide area in this neighbourhood, viz, what are known as "aliu- vial" or "gravel" beds carrying payable gold. These are not grivel beds in the ordin ry sense of the term; they have not been deposited by water. They really consist of the remains of those tiny quartz seams which have been broken up by the weathering of the country racks, and being harder than they have sur vivert the erosion and decomposition due to countless ages of atmospheric influences. They carry, partly undisturbed and locked up within the quarte fragments, and partly loose and

36. From what can at present be seen of the three ledes at Chindras, Priang, and Gubau, it is impossible to predict anything as to their probable permanence or value; but inasmuch as the chance samples taken give' an average assay value of over 5 dwt., they cannot be ignored in this low-grade country. The un- fortunate part about them is that they are all distant from present headquarters and mill, and the laying of a continuation of the railway to them, or to any one of them, hardly seems Justified as yet. But as a preliminary to milling texts, I would like to see some systema-

The devotion of say $5,000 to $10,000 to each of these three places would, in my opinion, finally solve the problem of Panjom's future. If these bodies are all transient or uppayable, there remains but little encouragement for further prospecting. Should even one prove lasting and profitable, the situa tion would be vastly improved. Whatever re- sources the Company may still possess should, have no hesitation in saying, be devoted to this work in preference to any other which is not actually and immediately remunerative.
