At the Police Court this morning, Sergt. Kerr endeavoured to obtain a conviction against three coolies for causing an obstruc. tion to pedestrians by carrying bamboo poles along a public footpath. The men ad mitted the offence, but Mr. Gompertz was unwilling to convict, as, in his opinion, there 40.00 is nothing in the Ordinance to indicate that it was framed for the purpose of preventing the carrying of poles on public pavements. In our opinion the law is quite clear on the point, and no difficulty whatever should arise regarding its proper interpretation. Every person who, upon any public footway, shall roll, or carry any barrel. cask, butt or any other thing calculated to annoy or in- commude the passengers thereon, except for the purpose of housing them or loading then into any cart or carriage on the other side thereof, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding £5," There should be no disput. ing the intent or meaning of this clause. and having regard to the fact that last week a Chinaman was fined $5 for carrying a shovel 135 along the footway, while sometime previous

THE Straits Times gives a long account of egg eating for a wager in Singapore. It appears that a number of Jewish gentlemen had gathered together after tiffin for the usual slack-hour chat, and presently arguments arose as to which of the gifted gentlemen in the assemblage could eat the most with the least effort. One of those present, Mr. J. Barook, wagered that, although he had just finished heavy meal, he was prepared to supplement it there and then with a dessert in the shape of
twenty raw eggs. The wager having been ac- cepted he proceeded with the work, and dis- posed of 22 eggs when he was called upon to stop by those who had offered to pay for a score of the cibarious ovp:ds.

The trials and tribulations of employers of Chinese domestics in Hongkong are unending, The latest vicum to the dishonesty of a servant is Doctor Itali-Wright, and a coal bill was the

room and shortly returned with a receipted bill for the amount, which receipt the Doctor filed ac- cording to custom. A few days ago another bil was presented for the same debit which aroused ais suspicions and caused lum to look into the matter. It then transpired that the money had gone into the houseboy's pocket, instead of into the coal-dealers. The boy was arrested. The coal-dealer's bill-collector stated that the boy came to him, when he had given him the bill to take to his master, and said he must paid. He did so, and subsequently called leave it for a few days, and then it would be

of the houses with their narrow doors, windows and staircases, it appears that the Hongkong and West River Steamship Company had but just moved into the second floor of No. 36 and there were stored a number of cases of rackets and bluelights such as are used by steamers at sea for signalling, and as the fire caught these cases the rackets exploded, and bursi through the Roors and roof, causing con stemnation among the Fire Brigade mea. The ground and first floors of No. 37 were occupied by the firm of 1 Yik Chung, sulphur, saltpetre, and "cracker merchants, and when the fire spread to thore floors the fumes from the burning sulphur harassed the firemen extremely, and greatly interfered with the efforts to fight the fire besides being largely responsible for the fire spreading so quickly, while the explosions of the rockets and crackers made it dangerous for the men to approach too close to the burning room. Fur thermore, there was an oil shop, kept by the Kwang Sang Wo firm, on the ground floor of No. 36, and efforts were mainly directed to-
wards preventing the flames spreading in that direction, so that while the ceiling and walls were considerably charred, this part was chiefly damaged by water, the floor being completely flooded. The second and third floors of No. 37 were occupied by the medicine shop of Kwong Hing Long, which were completely gutted, but
