In cross-examination by Mr. Gill, K.C. for the defendants, the plaintiff said he saw the letter written by Mr. Ross, manager of the St James Gosette, in which that gentleman

Mr. Bankes, K.C., for the plaintiff, in opering the case, submlited that the defendants, the publishers of the St. James' Gasette, under the pretext of criticising a book by Mr. Crosland, had made a gross and unjustifiable personal attack on him. Mr. Crosland did not object ta
easonable and fair criticism nor hard hitting, but the defendants had overstepped all limits to make a personal attack. Mr. Crosland, shortly before the article appeared, published a book called Lovely Woman. The article on the book in the St. James' Gastile began: { "Humour is cheap," and then, having referred to the plaintiff as an author having published one jeu d'esprit-being a reference to Mr. N.B.-A Special Charge is made for Lines | Crosland having previously published a book
