SIGNALS:
A NEW CODE.
We have received from the Hongkong Observatory a new code of meteorological signals which comes into force at Hongkong on New Year's Day. They are the same as those at present in use at Shanghai, and will be hoisted on the mast beside the time-ball a Kowloon Point for the information of masters of vessels leaving the port. They do not neces sarily imply that bad weather is expected. The signals are follows:--
A cone point upwards indicates a typhoon to the North of the Colony.
A cone point; upwards and drum below in dicates a typhoon to the North-East of the Colony.
A drum indicates a typhoon to the East of the Colony.
A cone point downwards and drom below indicates a typhoon to the South-East of the Colony,
A cone point downwards indicates a typhoon to the South of the Colony.
A cone point downwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the South-West of the Colony.
A ball indicates a typhoon to the West of the Colony,
A cone point upwards and ball below indicates a typhoon to the North-West of the Colony.
Red Signals indicate that the centre is believed to be more than 300 miles away from ibe Colony.
Black Sigoals indicate that the centra la believed to be less than 300 miles away from the Colony.
The above signals will, as heretofore, bo hoisted only when typhoons exist in such posi- tions or are moving in such directions that in- ormation regarding them is considered to be of importance to the Colony or to shipping leav ing the harbour.

METEOROLOGICAL THE CHINA COAST REGISTER is exhibited at the same places daily about noon. It contains observations made at Longkong and at a number of stations in the Far East, together with Remarks, Weathers forecasts, and information regarding the exist ruce and movements of ixphoons based thereon.
BPECIAL INQUIRIES.
Mastors of vessels or their agents may, whenever necessary, call at the Tele raph Company's Office in Connaught Road and send telegrams to the Observatory asht ng för special information without charge. Such “inquiries may also be sent from the Police Station at Kowloon Point which lo og nnected with the Observatory by Telephone.
