Mr. M. Noms, Consul for Japan, has official telegram from his Government :— courteously communicated the following

fit would cost to convert the Metropole Hotel into premises suitable for our purpose. We purchased the Metropole Hotel site for $50,000, and after we had decided to build the brewery on the adjoining site, we considéred the advisability of applying for a licence to sell our beer in the Metropole Hotel. That, however, would have involved the innate outlay of a large amount of money to put the premises in a proper state of repair, as well as

THE new river steamer Paul Beau met with a mishap on her last journey down to flongkong She left Canton about five o'clock on Monday evening and had got some five miles off the little island of Taishan, near Deep Bay, by about half-pasi ten at night, when it was found that her funnel was becoming exceptionally hot.

She was immediately stopped and everything

done to suppress a small fire which had broken out. Sabsequently the Fatshan was scen approaching and, signals run up for assistance, brought the steamer alongside and passengers were transferred and taken on to Hongkong The Paul Benu then dropped anchor and remained in the vicinity of Taishan for the night and was brought in to Hongkong yester day. It is understood that faulty stoking caused damage to the patent water tube boilers, which, it is well known, require exceptionally careful treatment.

THE TORPEDO-TRANSPORT "YENISEI"

DESTROYED AT PORT ARTHUR,

Our telegrams confirm the loss of the Russian torpedo-transport Venise, which, we are informed, was "hoisted with its own

petard" while laying submarine mines in the harbour at Port Arthur. This is another example of the striking misfortune which bas dogged the Russian war-ships since the opening of hostilities. One may reasonably surmise that considerable ignorance or, to put it indulgently, want of experience, exists amongst the Russian naval officers.

CABLE COMMUNICATION.

Mr. Olaf Nielsen, Superintendent of the Great Northern Telegraph Co., Ltd, informed us that telegraphic communication by the Great Northern Company's cable with Amoy, Shanghai, Japan, Korea and all stations in North China is again normal. Telegrama for Formosa can only be forwarded via that Company's Shanghai-Nagasaki cables and Japan. The Vladivostock route to Europe is still interrupted, but telegrams for Russia are accepted for transmission via Kiachta.

I think there is no doubt whatever that as soon as our shares are taken up, and we are thus placed in a position to carry out the object for which the company was formed, we shall be in a position to pay good dividends to nur shareholders. These sums practically exhaust the fund, hence the endeavours to raise a loan in Berlin of from twenty to twenty-five million sterling.
